Hi,

From here: http://www.parkers.co.uk/choosing/specs/...e1=&spare2=

we can see that:

1.8 20V S 4d(NON-TURBO) , 125hp ,0-62@ 10.6 sec

1.9 SEL TDi PD (115hp),0-62@ 10.4 sec

How is SAME car with less hp accelerates faster than car with more hp? 1.8 20V S 4d should accelerate almost as fast as TDI 130HP, which is 9.6sec.

Is the official data not correct?

Has anyone tested 1.8 20V acceleration?

Remember that non turbo petrol engine has proberly got about 115 lb/ft torque, where as the TDi has about 200 lb/ft, I would be suprised if the 1.8 n/a car is much if any quicker than a 115 TDi.

I just wish diesels had the rev range of a petrol car, if they did i think everyone would drive a soot mobile.

I TD is always going to be quicker off from a standing start sinply cos it has loads more torque compared to a petrol engine. but on top end speed the Petrol would have it as for a petrol the power band is higher compared to the TD which kicks in lower! unless of course you've got ur self a heafty 330D or a something like that.

Not true. It will be quicker mid range and the in gear times will be better. The petrol will accelerate off the line quicker as it has a better rev range and wont need a gear change so soon. Think how short the first gear is on a TD. You have to change up almost straight away dont you.
