Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else with a 2.0tdi s-line has any comments on how much road/wind noise they get around 60+ mph.

Recently I have noticed people cant hear me on my car kit when on the motorway, and after travelling in a friends 118d sport which is pretty much silent on the mway was wondering if anyone elses was as noisy.

Im aware the lower profile tyres wont help, but would be interested to see what everyone else thinks smile.gif

It is loud isn't it. It actually used to really annoy me how loud the cabin was, and it was the first thing I noticed when we swapped to the Cabriolet, just how much quieter it was.

Even our A2 was quieter, and the A6 we currently have is pretty much silent even at 90mph.

I wonder if this is something that Audi fixed with the 2006 MY suspension upgrade? There were suspension/steering tweaks that coincided with the introduction of the A frame grille on the 3 door.

My S-Line is as quiet as my 54 plate 1.8t Sport Cabrio was - and now on the motorway at least every bit as smooth.

The 1st 1000 miles saw the suspension settle down and become a lot quieter - and more compliant. The tyres are Pilots.

When I drove the 2.0 TDI S-Line that was 2004 model I thought it was very noisy. Partly the engine... which I have to say was strong in power but very poor in refinment. But it did suffer from a lot of road noise from the tyres, a lot from the back for some reason. It almost made me look elsewhere.

But I went for a 2.0 T Sportback in Sport trim with 17" alloys. The ride / handling is better and the noise levels much lower as a result. I think you are just finding that the Audi is not the most refined car in the world and 18" alloys might look good but the penalties are large than some may imagine. shocked.gif

I think it depends what you have come from, all my mates who drive round in smaller cars or Jap cars said I was mad, but coming from BMW's and bigger Audi's I really noticed it.

After taing out an S-Line sportback again recently it was the first thing I noticed.

Can't say I noticed any difference in noise going from a 2004 3.2 with 17"s and a 2005 s-line 3.2 with 18"s.

The ride is firmer and crashier over potholes in town with the 18"s (although on the open road nothing in it). Just depends where you spend most of your time driving...

I think the sound proofing on my A3 Tdi Sportback S-Line is quite bad engine noise coming in more than anything, I think the bulkhead area needs more padding, my A3 is the 2006 spec and as a post above I dont really have to much to complain about with road noise, I drove an A6 Tdi and was suprised how quite the engine noise was compared to mine?...

I would have to agree the biggest disapointment of my 2.0tdi DSG S-line is the amount of road noise compaired to my old 325ci BMW.

I find the engine quiet enough but the tyre nose about 90-100 is quite bad infat the BMW wasnt that loud at 130-140.

Im not sure if its the car or the tyres as my BMW was 225-18-35 on the Front and 255-18-35 on the rear so must me a but stiffer than 225-18-40's so you would think its the car!!!!

Might improve one the the Pirelli Rosso "No Grip dry or wet" are bald and replaced with something half decent!!!!

Or i could always buy another BMW Coupe!!!

  • 4 years later...

Tyre noise on my A3 2.0TDi Sportback is horrible - very obvious even at 30 mph and depends very much on the type of road surface. Tyre type is Pirelli PZero Rosso, 225/45 ZR 17 and I shall definitely try some other type when they are due to be changed - hopefully something with better grip than the woeful Pirellis...
