Chav
(FAO Avant_B6_130 et al) [ QUOTE ] Get yourself an iPod and an IceLink and connect this up to your headunit in favour of the CD changer! Thats what i have - installed the iPod in the central armrest - all lit up cool red at night! Thats the way most are going...... some like it visible on the outside, but i think its tempting fate! [/ QUOTE ] Can I ask some questions on behalf of IPOD dummies like myself?... How do you control the tracks etc in-car, do you have to open the armrest and press the IPOD buttons, or do the head unit track search buttons work too? Can I buy any IPOD? (e.g. a cheap one) Do they all light up red, or is that a particular one? and which bit lights up red... the lcd display? Does the IPOD charge when in the car? Can I use the IPOD to just play MP3 files. I don't use Itunes or anything like that, but have stacks of MP3 files from CD's I've bought etc... Also can you connect the IPOD and still have the CD changer at the same time, or is it an either/or thing. (I have concertII head unit) Where should I buy an IPOD and connector kit etc? (cheaply ) Cheers.

[/ QUOTE ] The IceLink allows you to choose tracks / albums etc. using the CD controls on your HU, but it is fiddly! I use the iPod controls - open the armrest and select away!!! It easiest if you have some good playlists set up, then track selection is dead easy from the HU. [ QUOTE ] Can I buy any IPOD? (e.g. a cheap one) [/ QUOTE ] Yep - any with the port interface at the bottom! I.e gen 2/3/4/Video and mini's. Dont buy shufle or nano as yet. [ QUOTE ] Do they all light up red, or is that a particular one? and which bit lights up red... the lcd display? [/ QUOTE ] Mis-phrase on my behalf!! Beacuse mine is an iPod Photo in white, it is lit up lovelly at night by the red lights in the armrest.... i think all A4 armrests have this....??? Looks fecking cool to me, but im sad like that [ QUOTE ] Does the IPOD charge when in the car? [/ QUOTE ] Sure does! [ QUOTE ] Can I use the IPOD to just play MP3 files. I don't use Itunes or anything like that, but have stacks of MP3 files from CD's I've bought etc... [/ QUOTE ] You need to use iTunes with the iPod to get the music on there / manage it. If you have existing MP3's, then you simply drag and drop them into the iTunes library and they pop onto you ipos next time it is connected! Same with any CD's - pop it in the CD drive an import into iTunes - iTunes will then connect to a database to set your album names and all track tags etc. (with internet connection). Mine is a photo, so i also have the album art when the track or single is playing [ QUOTE ] Also can you connect the IPOD and still have the CD changer at the same time, or is it an either/or thing. (I have concertII head unit) [/ QUOTE ] No - its either or. Mine is a Concert 2 also. There are some that have put a switch in place, but its pointless and messy - the iPos does the trick! Flog the CD changer on eBay to fund the iPod install! [ QUOTE ] Where should I buy an IPOD and connector kit etc? (cheaply ) [/ QUOTE ] Well, someone on here has posted Halfrauds at £99 installed!!! If thats true, its a bargain, if you trust them! There is a company called GHC that are the chaepest for the icelink and have good deals on iPods. Check out eBay and various on-line retailers for deals on iPods. Know what you want though..... mine is a 20Gb Photo with a colour screen, but a 3rd Gen mono screen might suit you fine! Hope that helps!

[/ QUOTE ] The SOny ones have a Connects2 kit available, but its not overly cheap (£120+ IIRC). You can use ANY mp3 player at all if you install an AUX-IN input to your Concert unit - you can get these on eBay / internet that will connect to your HU, but then you dont get it charging and you dont get the line-out sound quality, becuase the sound comes from the headphone socket, not the port at the bottom - you then control the volume via the unit AND your HU - never 100% ideal...... iPod and IceLink seems best.... [/ QUOTE ] Not portable, but have you considered a phatbox - cheap if you import from teh US and you work it via the OEM stereo controls (though display is a little limited) also you don'y crash changing tunes etc. ? nicknick
Would recommend a Phatbox ...have one in my A6 avant -sold the CD Changer on ebay for £130 (and only paid about £150 for the Phatbox from clairparts.com in US - though on ebay in UK now for about £175). The sw with the phatbox is simple to use and using the Phatbox in the car is also very easy. I think you get more control over the Phatbox via the CD buttons than you do with an IPOD ..with phatbox you can search music by albumn / artist / playlist / genre ..whereas I have read that you can only access ipod via the first 5 playlists (i.e the CD buttons on stereo are direct access to the IPOD playlists). What I liked about the phatbox was that it is out of sight ...but always there just like a CD Changer. For me it went straight into the CD Changer bracket in the boot behind the panel. All that said...I have just bought a cheap video IPOD ...but that is for holiday / in my other car that doesn't take phatbox...
