Jimbob_S3
Hello, My cars been playing up again for the last couple of months. I drive it in traffic most days, but for the last couple of months this has become hard work. The car doesnt drive very well at low revs i.e. between abou 1000 - 2500 rpm. Whilst in this range it sometimes lurches quite violently whilst im trying to crawl along in traffic as thou im pushing the accelerator to the floor an requesitng boost, but in fact im only pressing it a tiny amount. Similalrly i can be going on at a constant speed say 5mph and the car will lurch as if there isn't enough fuel, feels like the turbo or something else stops abruptly! This usually happens between 1500 to 2500 rpm. Im sure its not just my driving... Im sure the car used to be 'pleasant' to drive in traffic without all the lurching .....this all occurs in 1st and 2nd gear..Cars not chipped all standard. Any advice please !!! ??? A3Floyd
have you checked the diverter valve at all? when i got my S3, it was quite jerky and the DV was quite noisy too. replaced the DV and it was much, much smoother. They're dead cheap and easy to do a DIY job on too
Jimbob_S3
After looking at other posts I was suspecting this could be part of the problem. Cars got 90k on it... I might just replace the part to see if it makes it better. Might a faulty DV be responsbile for the sometimes inconsistent boost at higher revs ?? Oh- and how would I know if its noisy... ? A3Floyd
it is possible. The DV shouldn't make any noise at all really. With mine, the DV kept on making a funny noise like a 'flapping dump valve' whenever i changed gear. It's hard to explain the noise really! Either way, if you're Diverter Valve sounds anything like a Dump Valve, then it's not working properly. It's a ten minute job to replace them and they're really cheap - dont get one from Ebay, they're usually more expensive than from a dealer! Vagparts is cheapest most of the time. If you still have problems after that, then it 'may' be worth getting the turbo checked out. Let us know how you get on.
Jimbob_S3
Dont think its unusuallly noisy... But thanks for advice ! Will try changing it, but its gonna be a week or two before I get round to this with Christmas and all !! WIll let you know. Thanks....
Wallachie
My car doesn't idle very smoothly at the moment, anyone know what that could be?? The revs seem to jump up and down slightly when the car is cold.
Jimbob_S3
Hmmmm, don't know the answer but mine also fluctuates around + - 50 rpm when its cold ? and a bit less when its idle and warm.... Can anyone tell me about the "wastegate frequency valve" and where it is?? read on another thread that if the diaphgram is torn then this can give an overboost condition which gives a jerky ride similar to what I've got..... ??? [/ QUOTE ] I have the same problem. I've been advised to check the MAF sensor and see if that helps.. Haven't had a chance yet but i'll let you know how i get on when i do... Oh i've also read that it could be a more serious problem with a faulty timing chain tensioner solenoid, which causes incorrect valve timing....lets hope not eh as it costs anything up to £1000
Jimbob_S3
I had a new MAF about 6 months ago. To be honest I think it was after this was fitted that the problems started! Got my boost back, but inconsitently and jerky at low revs.. had a new timing belt too last december. If your getting a new MAF let me know if it cures the problem!! Perhaps mines faulty... notoriyasq
i have the same problem low revs its jerky and the engine rattles which vibrates the whole car! i have recently bought my car and to my knowledge the audi is not living up to its name! i took it to the garage where i had it diagnosed and the guy told me there was nothing wrong with the engine! i have just been told to change the spark plugs which may help! i dont know if this will help but i will let you know if there is a change! Mo-S3
Check your spark plugs for contamination such as oil deposits etc which can occur when using the car in traffic only. Check you air filter; is it clean? Is your DV noisy? maybe just worth replacing anyway as its not very expensive. Do a throttle body reset with vag com or if you dont have one; discoonect your battery for 10mins reconnect it and switch on your ignition (dont start the car) and leave it alone for 10mins. (dont touch the accelerater) Are you using crappy supermarket fuel? maybe worth putting some optimax in and going for agood blast on quiet private runway. So how you get on with the above
safety69
i have a 1.6 with 110,000 miles, and it also idles up and down when cold, also the acceleration when pulling away in traffic seems very un-responsive, seems like you can't feather it, you have to push it down a fair bit, seems like a major problem on most of the a3 range
