I'm sure TSN will demonstrate it's non-bias by giving you a 1-series forum if you can create enough subject matter for it and perhaps attract a few other owners here? I'll join in for sure, because I rated the 130i M Sport very highly and the more I think about it I was perhaps a bit harsh in my judgement of it's ride. But I recently took delivery of a 130i, and I can tell you that it is a very considerable motor vehicle. OK, the styling is controversial. In general, I'm not keen on the look of the 1 series. I think it's a mis-cue and won't have a long lifetime. But the 130 looks a little better, courtesy of slightly lower stance, slight flare to rear mudguards, and different body kit. It's not a head turner, but it looks pretty presentable from certain aspects. (Particularly rear quarter view - from the left, where the twin pipes are located - the aspect from which most people will see it.) Performance-wise, it's hard to fault. Why do you people buy your cars? To swan around and look cool in? The 130 really goes, with 195 Kw (~ 250 bhp in English) and 310 Nm, developing from 2,800 rpm. It's a delight to drive, with power coming on like a turbine. It has great pulling power from low down on the rev range. So what beemer should I have bought? 70% of the time I drive the car alone. 20% of the time I'm 2-up. 5% of the time I might take 3 or 4. (So I don't need a car the size of a 3 series.) And, with a bit of luck, 5% of the time I'll be on the track. If you're intersted, MrMe has posted a very nice road test in the "review" section. We all exercise individual choice when it comes to purchasing anything so enjoy the beemer don't let anybody put you off what is infact a very individual car. gizze Posted December 28, 2005 Report Share Posted December 28, 2005 I love the 1 series, I took a 120d out for the day before I bought the A3 S-Line and it was a better car in every respect apart from one, and that was I could not get the dog in the boot, so the A3 it was. But top car, nice easy drive and alot of fun when you want it, I imagine the 130i is an awesome drive and I see a couple of M3 boys have moved over to it which says everything really. Just my opinion, but BMWs are meant to be the ultimate driving machine..... 120d isnt thats for sure. Im sure the 130i is better, but I havent driven that so I dont know. [/ QUOTE ] I couldn't disagree more. The 120d is a stunning drive. It deserves the tag of the Ultimate Driving Machine more than a good deal more of the range. I chopped in my 120d which I owned for just over a year and really liked. My brief was to find a saloon or hatchback that would have a little bit more punch, I love the 120d, I probably would have been happy with it for another two years. However, during Christmas, for some illogical reason I decided to put some colour in those grey January months by going car shopping. I started by test driving an audi a3 3.2 sportback sportline. It was quick however I wasn't overwhelmed. this was followed by an a4 3,0 tdi again impressive, however,every time i got back into the 120 the difference in interior build quality was quite notable. BMW (I've got a 330ci as well) just have a superior feel. for example, the top of the a3 facia is really tacky, the air vents as old fashioned as those in a ford cortina really ugly, very much an after thought. I went on to test drive a 3.2 a4, it reminded me of a cross between a audi 20v quattro and a Rover saloon, very powerful but bulky and old mannish....my dad would buy one. I tentatively made my mind up to buy a new 3.2 sportback sportline, on the way back from the audi garage, I popped in to the local bmw garage to have a look at the 130i. It's really funny but I sat in it and immediately felt it was the right car, so I bought one. I usually concur with the views of clarkson, however, I understand that the 1 series is not to everybody's taste, for the first time in my life I don't give a feck. I really like the styling, it ticks all the boxes from most angles except the 3/4 front view. This means it's not a perfect design, which again appeals, I would call it character. Clarkson goes on and on about the golf, to me it is a piece of design that looks too perfect and homogenous it has no individuality in that all hatchbacks are looking a bit as though there all using the same CAD software these days. I like the 1 series as it sort of sticks 2 fingers up at what a car should be, you are right Audi are becoming boring, they are getting more like Mercedes in that respect. I am sure with the new breed, new Q7, Shooting Brake and A5 etc. they will get back on form, but there is nothing that really excites me at the moment. I think it has the same turbo 2 litre as the golf gti. Steering, ride, performance were very impressive. Not quite enough torque for me though. what about the RS4? that's putting the cat among the pigeons I have heard that the new m3 to be released later this year is no match for it. I had a new Audi S6 for about four years and it was a super car, i just wish they wouldn't keep orientating their spec for the non rs and s cars to the "american orthodentists in Texas" market. gizze Posted January 10, 2006 Report Share Posted January 10, 2006 The 2.0T fsi Sportback is very good, and will remap to around 265bhp, however, the problem is they offer it in manual quattro and FWD with the fantasic DSG gearbox, but you can't get the DGG with Q. If you could I would have one in S-line guise. RS4 avant looks awesome, but again manual only and just short of £55k with spec. which is too much for me I have decided.
