bfc1912
To wind me up even more I've had to type this twice as when I posted it the first time it said that I hadn't filled everything in and I should hit the back button. I DID AND EVERYTHING HAD GONE. Sorry if this is a bit long winded but it has really wound me up I’ll begin at the start as this is a bit long. After ordering my GTi I spent the time waiting for it to arrive smiling and surfing this forum and was therefore well aware that after going for the armrest I should get a bottle opener. On the day I went to collect the car low and behold no bottle opener so told the salesman who said “he’d order me one straight away”. The bottle opener never appeared so I went back in to enquire where it was. Unfortunately it was the salesman’s day off so I told the receptionist who would pass on the message and get things sorted. Nothing happened again so I went in a third time. Caught the salesman outside and reminded him about this and he said he was “sorry and that it must have got lost in the post” and that he’d “order one straight away”. Of course again the bottle opener never appears so I went in for a fourth time. The salesman was on holiday but I had 2 very helpful salespeople who searched in desks and even got the keys for all the new deliveries and searched through them. One of them even confirmed that the bottle openers were being taken out of the cars at the docks by the light fingered drivers. They said they’d “pass the message on and get the salesman to order one”. I should have seen what was coming but unfortunately I’m quite laid back and went with the flow. The other week the door seal decided to fall off the passenger door so I booked the car in for repair and whilst I was there told the receptionist about things. She said that “I was complaining to the wrong person but she’d put a note on the system for the salesman to look at this and see me when I came in”. I took the car in today but unfortunately missed the salesman so when I went to pick it up I spent time waiting. He was with some customers so waited 30 minutes to see him. When he broke away he said that “the manager had said that they didn’t come with the car but I could buy one for £20”. I said that “I had ordered the armrest so it was standard and it showed it in the manual”. He went away and 10 minutes later comes back saying that they’d “been on the phone to VW who said that the car shouldn’t come with the bottle opener”. I pointed out that the cup holder was useless without the bottle opener and that it definitely showed it in the manual. He goes back in the office and 10 minutes later comes out (looked in the office and could see him and the manager looking through some kind of manual) again saying that VW had said that I shouldn’t have one. I then told him that I knew of people who had received their cars at the same time as me and did have a bottle opener, that this was the 5th time of asking and I was only now being told that I couldn’t have it and that when I had come in before his colleagues and told me about them going missing at the docks. He said that “he had been told by VW that I shouldn’t have one”. I asked “how should use the cup holder” to which he replied “just put a cup in it”. Whilst I was waiting I’d looked in one of the cars with an armrest to check for a bottle opener (none present) so showed him how it was useless with out the bottle opener. He basically agreed but said “that he couldn’t give me one because VW said that it wasn’t standard on 2006 models”. I asked him “whether my car delivered in May 2005 was a 2006 model?” and he replied “yes”. At this point I was getting nowhere and had been in the showroom over an hour. I said that “I wasn’t going to waste anymore time over a £20 bottle opener that I was supposed to get with the £25k car I had bought and that quite frankly he was taking the piss”. I then walked out. I’m about to ring VW customer care but can anyone give me some ammo?
Simonl
[ QUOTE ] I asked “how should use the cup holder” to which he replied “just put a cup in it" [/ QUOTE ] Sorry matt, but that is an A+ cocky answer from the salesman Personally, I don't get the bottle opener/cup holder thing, what's all that about. I always thought the bottle opener was just some freebie with the car, like a GTI pen or something, used for, eer opening bottles! If it makes you feel better, i don't think mine came with one, nor any descent keyrings, nor a GTI leather handbook! IMO it's just luck of the draw! spankit
Order a bottle opener from the parts dept. When it arrives take it from the parts dept. person as if to have a look at it. once in your hands don't pay for it. Then put up a massive stink about how this should have come with car, how you have no intension of paying twice for the car part etc... Tell the parts dept. to take it up with sales, but do not let the dealership get the bottle opener out of your paws. Make a stand, this is about principle. Simonl
can you really be ars.ed II'd rather not make myself look like a plank infront of a showroom full of people for a feckin bottle opener. TP27
My R has the armrest and there's no Bottle Opener. I asked the salesman at delivery, "where is the bottle opener" and I got the same reply as you. In fact, I got told "the bottle opener is no longer supplied with the armrest option". When I asked why the Demo R32 that I test drove the week before, had a bottle opener in it, I received a blank expression. When I pushed as to whether the opener had been stolen by someone in the dealership, I got a nod !! For the record, I still do not have a bottle opener in my R !!! scillyisles
Thanks for this I had not realised that I should have been provided with a bottle opener - it quite clearly shows it in the manual as you say.
spankit
Mine came without the bottle opener, and was supplied one gratis. The opener is a part of the car and you have paid for it. Save it for when your engine blows up [/ QUOTE ] Personaly too many people let car dealers take the piss. The more people stand thier ground and don't let dealers walk all over them, the less likely dealers will be to act like chancers.
mainy
Stand your ground Matt Your experience is absoloutely shocking, I cant understand why the dealer would pi$$ a customer who has just spent 25k with them over a part that they probably pay about £10 for. belperandy
It shouldn't be about the Value of the Item. The Car comes with it for a reason, and if you are an enthusiast you are going to want to keep all the Memorabilia. I think same happened with R32 umbrella. It's a unique bit of kit for that car and should be kept with it. Make sure the stealer Give's it to you. Infact call then what they are "A Stealer" LOL
TwoSheds
I bet VW wish they had never made this 'sliding stainless steel holder' into a usable bottle opener. The amount of agro it causes, is unbelievable, when they disappear & the bad feelings it seems to generate. Mine was there...shouldn't be the luck of the draw though. delboy240575
Matt, I picked my car up Dec 05 so definitely an 06 car. Mine had the bottle opener so the 06 excuse is crap. You are also right, the drinks holder is useless without the opener as the shape creates two holder slots, so keep asking. You are doing the right thing going to VW Customer Service, just keep your cool and explain the complete lack of service. It may be a minor piece of kit, but you did pay for it. Best of luck. Simonl
Where is it meant to be anyway?!? Also, it might not be the dealer nicking them. Could be zose crazy germanz ya!
TwoSheds
If you have front armrest, its in the sliding topped cubby hole to the front of that. Seems to be supply of the openers on Ebay for sale.
AlanH
My understanding is that the bottle openener was always part of the car - an included accessory - and not a freebie. I got one with my 2005 model, but VW forums are full of owners who, for whatever reason, didn't get one with their car. So, worth chasing VW Customer Service, but might also be worth sending a letter to the Dealer Principal, and cutting out the middlemen. Ok, it's only a bottle opener, but it's also a matter of principle and maintaining good customer relations, and that's how the dealership should see it. spankit
Matt i bet thev stealer is having a laugh with his collegues right now! STEALER "...yeh had this punter in the other day wanting the old bottle opener. Fed him the old head office/vw uk line, lol lol he soon shut the feck up etc..." This is principle Matt get your bottle opener from them, they owe you one, you've paid for it when you bought the car.

rowley
taking this further. Is there a list of must haves before accepting the car off the dealer? Due to pick up mine on March 1st and I don't want to sign for it unless all the bits that I've paid for are present. Worrying that things like leather manual case, bottle opener etc are missing.... Anyone got a quick list of things to check for?

Snoopy
From your post i see you have seen the sales manager. Ask for the branch manager then if no luck the Dealer group manager. But if i was you i would just contact VW and get them to send it direct and tell them of all this hassle. Then NEVER GO BACK TO THIS DEALER AGAIN. Take your car to ANOTHER dealer from another dealer group for any warrenty work to be done. Don't go back there again for anything and let people know what dealer this is. If i was you i would name and shame on here, G.
RedRobin
As I'm teetotal I have no need for the supplied bottle opener and it got in the way of what I wanted to put in that stowaway. I removed it and have no idea where I put it! Should I find it and auction it on eBay? Cheers!
Melchior
Mine came with one. MY06 car delivered in August '05. Never opened a bottle with it but I use it for my sat-nav by means of having my Nokia 6630 (running tom tom) clipped to it, and in that respect I wouldn't be without it. Poor show that you've had to enquire so many times about this. If it truly is the case that VW don't supply them anymore (which I find hard to believe) then you should have been informed about this on your first enquiry. GTiMK5
Have one in my 2005 GTI and there was one in each of the R32's I test drove. If there is not one in the R32 when I pick it up I will just have to take the one out of the GTI.
