S4 concert & BNS to RNS-E conversion

Recommended Posts

Here's a little project I did on Saturday for Ed and his B6 S4. Converted the dash from single to double din and upgraded the concert II to an RNS-E. Removedthe BNS controls and installed the new compartment.

Craig,

Many thanks - it was good to meet you.

I am very happy with the work. All in all (including a quick trip to audi to pick up a few bits) it took about 3 hours.

I can highly reccomend Craig - he even gives you a cup of tea! I stuck around and lent the occasional hand (I think - Craig may think I was more the way!).

This really is quite a bit of work (because you are moving from 1 Din to 2, and you need to know what you are doing when you remove a frightening amount of dash and the centre console (between the seats too). The bit you might not want to watch is the cutting of a few bits - notably the aircon sides so it can move down. However, the end result is 100% factory and I am delighted with it.

An added bonus is that the Bose sound is definately stronger with the new head unit.

Thanks again Craig, and I hope you sort the steaming up on the RS6! Oh, and thanks for the help (well - actually doing!) the install of my roadpilot too.

Ed.

Sorry to open an old thread, My dad's 2003 A6 has the old BNS 4.0 sat nav in the boot, controls by the handbrake and no display, multi cd in dash, we want to upgrade this to an rns-e unit, will it just slot in and take the speed input from the speedo, or will it need stuff disconecting like the rns-d to rns-e upgrades?

You'll need to disconnect the BNS, and if you want to use the existing GPS antenna you'll need a Fakra to Fakra extension lead to get the connection behind the dash. BTW the BNS controls won't work with the RNS-E.

You'll also need an ISO to Quadlock adapter and an antenna adapter (Fakra + "car" to dual Fakra). I'm not sure if the A6 radios have the separate speed wire that the RNS-E needs?

Make sure you get an A6 RNS-E as the faceplate for different models are different sizes and shapes, and you'll need access to VAG-COM (VCDS) to check coding and clear and fault codes.
