Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror Retrofit

Recommended Posts

Hmm... a little more complicated than it might first appear!

ETKA lists two different parts for the automatic anti-dazzle mirror for the A3, without making it clear what the difference is:

8P0 857 511

4F0 857 511 E

These then have different clip-on covers to hide the wiring:

8P0 857 593 (single part)

4F0 857 593 F & 4F0 857 593 D (two part).

Most of these mirrors and covers come in three different trim colours - silver, black or beige.

Is that just for the A4 ..or do you think it would work for an A6..I have the autodim in my BMW and would like it in the A6....I was thinking of just buying a BMW mirror from Ebay UK (lots of them) and mounting that (seeing as it only needs 12v and and earth) - but then rain sensor sounds interesting ?..look forward to hearing how you get on...

The same mirror should work in the A3 A4 and the A6.

The mirror funcion appears to be the easy part to get working. There are a couple of bits that I am still working out, such as the bracket that fits to the windscreen and the cable for the auto wipers.

I have located this cable from kufatec which will provided the correct connection for the mirror. smile.gif

Peter, Could you tell me the part numbers for the same job on the A4, or would it be the same except 8E0 replacing 8P0?

I have just replaced my non working auto dimming mirror in the S3. Got it from Vag parts, much cheaper, but still quite pricey, circa £90 ish.

It came witht he cover for the wiring. Couldn't tell you if just needs 12v supply, but would guess so.

Forget about the screen connector, on the S3 it is similar to a flat nut which is set into the glass. The mirror clips onto it and requires a lot of force to do so. I would suggest modifying the mirror mount and sticking it onto the screen directly.

Hmmm that sounds slightly worrying considering that the mount is directly in the glass. I will have to see what I can come up with if I have to overcome this problem. I suppose the other option is to get the windscreen replaced with the one for the auto mirror that is if it gets a crack in it.

Have you got a picture of the mirror you have just fitted?

Be VERY careful when pushing against the windscreen - they are designed to resist a lot of force from outside the car but are weak from inside the car. I remember my friend breaking a windscreen pushing to glue a mirror back on - used superglue instead of the special glass glue...

This is what the audi manual says about fitting the new mounting point.

Procedure

Remove mirror plate from mirror base.

Use wire brush to remove PUR-adhesive from mirror plate.

Grind off three spacers on bonding surface. Use sandpaper (360/400 grain) on flat surface.

Keep sanded surface clean and free from dirt and grease.

Use glass scraper to remove PUR adhesive and primer from windscreen down to ceramic layer.

Important:

Do not damage ceramic coating. Scratches will remain permanently visible.

Clean bonding area with adhesive remover D 002 000 10 or cleaning solution D 009 401 04.

Cut nylon mesh fabric exactly to the size of the mirror base.

Note:

Wear hand protection (rubber glove).

Apply adhesive evenly and smoothly to base of mirror.

Fit nylon mesh fabric onto base of mirror.

Apply further adhesive to nylon mesh fabric by dabbing with the tube.

30 seconds are available for applying the adhesive to the nylon mesh fabric before pressing it onto the windscreen.

Press base of mirror firmly (do not use force) against windscreen for 15 seconds.

Remove excess adhesive with a cloth.

Note:

Interior mirror can be fitted after 15 minutes.
