wyliss
Just wondering between the two engines what you guys with your experience would recommend.
BenjaminTDI
IIRC the 1.8T is 163bhp and the 2.4V6 is 170. The 1.8T will be more economical and maybe even a little quicker/easier to drive. The 2.4 will probably sound excellent with the roof down, but drink a bit more fuel Take a drive in both before you make your mind up.
Milo
I would go for the 1.8T. You gain the V6 noise on the 2.4 but very little else on the plus side.
BenjaminTDI
AND...with the 1.8T you can quite easily get a milltek exhaust and a custom re-map and you'll have well over 200bhp and a nice sounding engine that still returns reasonable MPGs
wyliss
Thanks guys for the thoughts...appreciated. I saw a lovely 1.8T in MC Motors the other day...lottie fox told me about it. When I called it had gone. Moro blue, rs4 alloys...beautiful but had 85k on clock and was an 03 plate. Looking at the the stealers nationally there are quite a few 2.4's for around £17-18K...that was erason for asking really. Will probably hold out for a 1.8T. Would love a 1.8T quattro, but not seen many 03 plate ones advertised.
BenjaminTDI
dibbs I will keep my eyes open for anything I see for sale on any other forums/magazines and let you know if I see anything
Soapsuds
the 2.4 also drinks oil like a fish for some reason 3.0 is a better motor and same economy too. 1.8T is a nice motor to drive. I have never driven a cab, but drove a 1.8T A6 which is probably similar weight (??) and it was reasonably sprightly. Loads of them about too, so easy parts / servicing etc.
lottiefox
Dibbs I had a 2.4 cab - don't do it. It drank fuel, it ate oil to the extent I called Audi Assist as I thought I had a leak. Its a smooth engine but lifeless, no grunt, and shocking going up hills - heavy car, heavy engine, not a good mixture. The 1.8T is a fab engine, easily tunable if you want to, but good ooomph as it is and easy to run. just my view!

wyliss
Thanks ben. How did you find this, whats the best way of searching for all cabs that are on sale?
shark_90
Even stealers hate 2.4 cabs, proven by the guy's reaction in Listers when I was in there with lottiefox last week! Go for the 1.8T
Phantom
If it were me I would compare the 1.8T with the 3.0 instead. The 2.4 isn't too bad, having owned mine for nearly three years now. Yes it is relatively thirsty but this is down to how you will use the car and your driving style. Mine is also not that thirsty on oil, using on average a litre of oil every 6000 miles. I personally prefer the silky V6 nature of the 2.4 rather than the noise it makes !! As many have said on here before, the cab is a cruising car, ideal for motorways etc, but yes the engine is heavier than the 3.0 and is not meant to be an all out performance car. I am sure the 1.8T is a great engine but after experiencing the V6, hopefully, my next will be a 3.0 (or more ) Good luck with whatever you decide to go with

BenjaminTDI
[ QUOTE ] Thanks ben. How did you find this, whats the best way of searching for all cabs that are on sale? [/ QUOTE ] Just used the main search page on exchange and mart. Autotrader is another good one. There are a few nice ones on pistonheads at the mo but i have a feeling they are above your budget. They don't get much of a mention by most people, but they're ace - and seem better balanced than the FWD, among other things . Keep your eye out, just in case...
