Prhim
When I turn the steering wheel in my wife's new Sportback 3.2, I can feel some sort of grinding through the steering wheel, and sometimes hear it too. It's pretty consistent (i.e. not intermittent) at speeds under 20mph - i.e. turning sharp corners is car parks etc (but I'm not talking full lock). I sent it back to the garage for investigation, but they are claiming nothing's wrong. Sounds like a load of bull to me - none of the other cars I drive do this. Has anyone else had this problem, or can anyone suggest likely causes I should get the dealer to investigate? thanks
DHA
It could be the steering rack. My S4 had problems and made noises. Or possibly wheel bearing? I would try another dealer and see what they say.
dgl
My Sportback was just in at the dealers. When you turn the wheel quickly, the power steering feels very lumpy. I don't hear any noise with mine though. No fix as yet, I need to book it back in.
harddrive
I had a problem with a grinding sound from my brakes when I first got the car. I guess that it could have just been grit between the pad and the disc but the dealer was very good and tested everything on the car to make sure it was safe. I would take it back to the dealer and have them check it again.
cdb2
Have a look at the A3 8P forum on audi-sport.net. A lot of guys on there have either had grinding when turning the wheel at low speed or a feeling the power steering is not there if you turn very quickly at low speed. Some have had replacement racks, seems to be a known issue, though some with replacement racks now have the problem back. Seems ongoing.
Prhim
Latest from Audi dealer is that have had similar complaints from other A3 owners and now think it may be the pump(?). Apparently, they've sent an electronic diagnosis (of what, I'm not sure) to Audi...
Gren
My wife has this on her A3. Its been into the stealers and they said that the problem is known to Audi but they don't know the cause or solution. We're on the list to be contacted if they find out. Seems a bit crap if you ask me that they can't at least find the source of the problem.
