A8 Gearbox Problems

The work was done by independent Owen Ferry in Paisley (www.owenferryauto.com) and attached are the photos that he took during the job.

The part numbers used on my 1999 3.7 Quattro are:

Oil Strainer (filter): 01V 325 429

Washer (O-ring) for drain plug: 01V 321 379

Gasket for bottom pan: 01V 321 371

The filter and gasket part numbers seem to be the same as for the 4.2 (per AudiPages) except that they start 01V instead of 01L. The washer is quite diferent for some reason.

I've got the old filter here and will split it open and post the pictures when I get time.

I've had one possible explanation suggested for the official Audi line on these boxes. All manufacturers are under pressure to publish 'Total Cost of Ownership' (TCO) figures which include stealer charges for all planned maintenance for the vehicles. If you take the cost of these parts plus stealer hourly charges and VAT then this would be a significant additional cost for Audi to publish as part of their TCO calculations. This sounds plausible although personally I've never seen TCO figures published anywhere. Anyone else any thoughts on this?

Thanks Sneaky.

I don't have the invoice here but the total was under £300 including VAT. Biggest difference was the labour rate of course.

Re-assuring that the part numbers are the same as mine - looks like the same car. Only joined the forum recently, but I get the impression you've not got the 3.7 any more? What you got now?

Ok, as promised here is my feedback on QAS bristol. So they have the Mega flushing machine and they can do full rebuilds if required. However before they did this they took a sample of the oil from my gearbox to test it and after the 60 odd thousand miles I have done the oil was just like new!!!

Their recommendation was that changing the oil would be a waste of time an money as their analyser said the oil had not lost any of its integrity, was not contaminated in anyway and was at the appropriate level suggesting there were no leaks. He said if it was his car he would leave it just as it is. Good enough for me.

So they charged me £28 labour for the check and sent me on my way.

I realise this is a complete contrast from the other stories on here so what conclusions can I draw:

1.) My gearbox will blow up in 100 miles and the specialist will have lied....unlikely though given he had the chance to make £109 and turned it down

2.) Some of you have just been very unlucky?

3.) The replacement box fitted to mine after 72k is in someway different from the orignal fitted?

4.) As mine does 90% motorway cruise and I hardly every use the Tiptronic the box has an easy life?

5.) Who knows???

However the details of the place I used are on the website below and the guy to speak to is Jon Lovegrove, found him really helpful, lets just see if my gearbox is working a year from now!

Spenc, they had no reason to tell lies afterall you were paying regardless of the extent of work carried out, good on them for giving a honest verdict. 169144-ok.gif

As NickGUK has posted above. If you are going to do just one change it is cheaper to buy 8 litres from a stealer because the ESSO 71141 is only available in 20 litre drums (although about half the price you have almost 3 refills in 20 litres). My son (NikW) and I bought 71141 because we were both doing our cars and Nik wanted enough for a second change (without a gearbox sump drop on the second change - you cant get all the old oil out even draining overnight and without a sump drop you need less because another litre or so is trapped).

Hi,

just read through this section, very informative, as I was about commit Hari-kari!

I have been informed by my local Dealer ( STEALER - love it ) that the "mis-fire" on my A8 2.8 Quattro Sport is not actually a mis-fire at all? They apparently diagnosed wrong ( how - did the computer lie! ). I have had all leads and plugs replaced, coil changed and even injectors fitted and removed! After a test drive down the A52 with my beloved still wired to a lap top they ( STEALER Inc. ) confirmed I had no electonic fault and no errors displayed YET my cars revs increased 500 to 800 and returned without the cars speed increasing? No Knocks or squeals???

"Its your gearbox mate - £3300 for a reconditioned unit please! "

After taking notes from ALL your contributions I have confidently rang them back and asked for the "Non-serviceable Gearbox" to be serviced.

"It's not something we have done before sir but I will work out a price".

I am awaiting his phonecall - will keep you posted......

116K - FSH ( apart from the gearbox I pressume ).

My dealer is still working out a price, I asked the mechanic to start draining it tonight but he said they could not AND that it wouldn't take long tomorrow because they would get it nice and hot with a quick drive?

Should I be concerned???

Personally I would be concerned.

If they can't/won't leave it draining overnight then how much advice will they accept on how to do the rest of the job properly? It's not the engine oil they're changing, FFS!

I'm not sure where you're located, but if I were you I would be seeking out a specialist and discussing PaulW's procedure with him.

Alternatively, if you have a garage, four axle stands, a few spanners and a helper it really isn't a tricky job to do yourself. This is my preferred method simply because I know I've done things properly (leaving it to drain overnight, cleaning the sump pan out thoroughly, seating the seals correctly, and so forth).

IMHO a stealer gearbox service will at best be expensive, at worst done incorrectly, and don't kid yourself that they will accept responsibility if the box plays up afterwards. NONO3.GIF

I agree with NikW. I did speak to the dealer about doing mine and they were clueless. Found a local indy specialist, spoke to the head mech there (quizzed him after memorising paul W's procedure) and he was familiar with the correct procedure. Got it done there and it only cost £160. Dealer would have been about 3 times that!

I thought the whole point of leaving it overnight was to ensure that it's cold when refilling? So them promising to get it nice and hot sounds like they haven't a clue what they're doing. If they haven't done it before, then I personally wouldn't be giving them my £4000 transmission to learn on.

Cheers Guys,

I have been on and off the phone all day to my Stealer. I kept hearing myself "...I'm not trying to teach you how to suck eggs grandma, but...". The Top mechanic I spoke to AND Audi Derby ITSELF had clearly not undertook this procedure before...we agreed a price of £150 + vat ( bit his hand off )and I am still waiting for parts to arrive - Mon / Tues ????

I am currently recovering from a serious ankle injury so any DIY is out of the question BUT if anyone knows of garage/mechanic close to Derby who are familiar to this procedure please let me know as my confidence is shaking!?!?

EEK2.GIF Let us know how you get on, won't you?

If you're set on using them when they clearly aren't experienced in the task I strongly suggest you instruct them in writing what you want done, including the parts you want changed, then if the shtf.gif you've got a come-back.

S8ed,

after sleeping on this and reading your comments I am having second thoughts!!!

The two specialists in this section are 200miles north and 150miles south of me....aaarrghh. Does anyone know of a gearbox specialist nearer to Derby?

I have printed out a copy of the A8 Transmission Service included earlier and I am visiting my dealer to discuss

the procedure face to face...will keep you informed.
