johncook
Hi everyone, Tomorrow i'm going to look at the black MK4 R32 at the dealership. If its in good shape and they confirm its had the V6463 software update / haldex oil&filter service at 20k miles etc... then I will seriously think about buying it there and then. I would like to ask you guys with the R32, how many miles can you get per tank. According to information on the web the MK4 R32 has a 62 litre (13.6 gallon) petrol tank. This I take it is bigger than the normal mk4 petrol tank. (makes sense as its a bigger engine, will use more fuel so needs to carry more around). Anyway, how many miles can you get per tank of petrol - 1) normal mixed driving (town and motorway)? 2) town driving only ? 3) long distance motorway trips only?? Thanks Cooky
Dan32
I think the numbers are about: 1) 250-300 2) 200-250 3) 300-400 I find if you can keep a steady 80-90mph pace on motorway you'll get 30mpg on the gauge but town driving I often find it reading 18mpg, or less on very spirited drive! Rocket_Man
I think i'm right in saying that all the 4Motion golfs had a larger fuel tank (by about 5 litres) over the FWD versions. About 360 miles is my best (29MPG). Thats 320 miles of motorway with the rest being in town. However half a tank can disapear in the blink of an eye during "weekend mode" (as i like to call it) diving
Mook
I've never done a measurement of "miles per tank" - I just drive and fill up again at 1/4 tank. The long term average on my car is 24.5 mpg, which is mixed driving. As per Dan's post, at exactly 80 mph set on cruise on a motorway, I've had 31.6 mpg showing on the trip computer after a 100 mile journey, but that was with no stops and careful driving, not having to brake, accelerate etc. - yes, I was knackered afterwards, having to pay so much attention and plan a lot further ahead than normal to fit into spaces for overtaking etc... The best (worst) I've had on track days is 8.9 mpg
johncook
thanks guys. That helps a bit. I remember reading a thread on another website and this bloke with an R32 said he only got 240 miles per tank. I did the maths with the tank size and ave. MPG consumption and thought this was very low so was then thinking is the tank super small! Its just a pain to fill up often, at least the tank is bigger and if I can squeeze 300 miles out of the R i'll be happy with that. 300 is about 23mpg x 13 gallons = 299 miles. The mini has a 11 gallon tank and that need filling up all the time, its really annoying!!! I know what u mean by half a tank of petrol disappearing. In the mini the petrol gauge is not linear, so the first half of the tank (on the gauge atleast) holds much more than half the tank of petrol, the 3rd quarter on the gauge goes very quickly so you end up on the last 1/4 and think where the hell has all my fuel gone. Dont know why things like that annoy me but they do, they never did before I owned the mini, but it really pissed me off. Cooky
jimmyt180975
I am also looking to buy an R32 in next month or so - just the petrol consumption that is worrying me a bit. I have a Civic Type R at the moment and spend on average around £80 a month on fuel (just two fill ups a month)- what sort of figure will this go up to with an R32? Just dont want to be constantly filling up.
Mook
If you're getting 35 to 40 mpg from your Civic, then reckon on spending almost as much again as you do now, so about £140 to £150 per month. I currently go through at least £400 a month on fuel, but do a fair few miles. If I don't travel anywhere on business, with the 20 or so mile daily commute and a couple of short trips at the weekend, I burn at least a full tank a week. Without wanting to sounding blatant, if you're worried about fuel consumption, even at an average 24 mpg, then the R32 is probably not the right choice of car for you. Craigieboy
Most miles I had on a full tank was 390, but that was driving up to avimore so it was mostly all motorway miles. An average mileage per tank I'd say about 250-300, mostly driving to and from work gives me nearly the 250, add some motorway trips and it gets closer to the 300 mark. Usually fill it twice a month, about £55 a time. Worth every penny
RossG
I've had my MK4 for nearly a month now, and have covered just over 1000 miles. Generally, I am filling it up, just as the needle drops into the red, having covered between 250 and 280 miles. I haven't had the chance to do any long trips yet, and my daily driving is a commute of 25 minutes, with a bit of dual carriage way and then a bit of town driving. My weekends tend to be a combination of motorway and heavy traffic in town. My overall MPG for the thousand miles is 22.4 Coming from a Fabia vRS - I have basically doubled my fuel use. I'm going through roughly a tank a week - at about £55 a pop. And yes, it's worth every penny
