Which speed camera locator?

Recommended Posts

I'm totally confused with speed camera locators! I wanted a Road Angel Compact but now from what I understand it doesn't show the current speed limit unless you're in a camera "zone".

Since then I've looked on the web at TDS-TR20/30 and also the RoadPilot range but none seem to have what I'm looking for. So my question is which detector shows the current speed limit regardless of whether there's a camera around?

I'm often unclear of the speed limit on roads and don't want to be caught out!

Why don't you go for a TOMTOM 500, which is a sat nat. I have the latest download of speed camera's for it, which includes all temporary sites also. But it doesn't include accident black spots. Very good though, had mine approx 14 months and wouldn't go anywhere without it, I do about 20k per year

I'm only looking for something that continously shows the speed limit of the road you're travelling on...

Talex's [normal and lite version] come out top in this weeks auto express - cheap to buy and subscribe too! [and i believe it tells u the speed of the road u are on]

I've seen the review and had a look at some sites (although the talex.co.uk one is down) but none state that it shows the road speed limit at all times confused.gif

I have just bought the Road Angel Plus, which gives you your speed all the time, wireless with battery backup.

£305 on TN in the group buys.

Hope this helps.

Thanks I'm aware of that discount but I'm looking for something that continously shows the speed limit of the road you're travelling on not just the cars speed!

I've got TT5 on my Ipaq with the cameras. It gives off a bl00dy big "awooga!" when I'm about 600yrds from the camera. Enough time to slow down/ensure you're at the right speed wink.gif

It also gives you a running speed (pretty accurate too)

Hope this helps

None of the units are going to do this. If you think about it, the way the systems work is that there is a database entry for each known camera, its type, position and orientation plus the speed limit in effect at the camera's location. For the 4000, or so, camera sites in the country, this is a perfectly reasonable data set. If you want to have a database, with the speed limit in effect at every point on every road, then that's going to be a b****y big database (for an integrated solid-state device). The associated problem would be that of maintaining the data.

I can't see anyone compiling the data, and producing a suitable device ... until such time as the government decrees that we must all have adaptive speed-limiting controls fitted to our cars. I believe that such devices are already on trial, but with a very limited area database.

If when driving along the road you see a sign that looks like this....

sign038.gif

The number in the middle tells you how fast you need to be going. In this instance the 4 and the 0 when put together means 40 mph.

This sign is for the National speed limit, which is 60 mph on single carrigeway and 70 mph on a dual carrigway or motorway....

sign039.gif

If there are no signs and there are streetlights you should be doing 30mph, if there are no signs and no streetlights you should not exceed 60mph.

If you do not know what the speed is on the road you are driving you need more than a gps device to tell you!! Maybe best to look for a chauffeur!!??

Seriously though, it can be annoying when you see a police car or similar on some UK roads and you are never sure if it is a 50 or 60 or maybe even a 40mph bit of road, and for this reason I can completely undertand why you would want a unit that tells you what the speed limit is. As said though, that is an awful lot of data to have in a small unit and I can't ever see it happening.
