DIS Retrofit... SUCCESS!!!

Good news chaps, I've been arsing around with my car most of the evening and I'm pleased to say the DIS retrofit was a complete success!

I will do a full howto when I get the chance and post it up, but all in all it took about 1hr to 1.5hrs and it wasn't particularly hard.

I now have to ground the pin for the washer bottle sensor (or fit the sensor grin.gif) but it is definately all working. I only have the "single trip" computer, ie the one that does current trip. It doesn't seem to have the "lifetime" option, but that might be a coding thing rather than a hardware thing. I have a feeling having DIS1 is as good as I'm going to get though. Further messing around (not at this time of night) will show though.

Picture to prove it actually works (which is bloody disturbing after owning a TDi!):

Lol! Seriously, thanks to m1chet's input and inspiration and also rockstar's steering wheel removal guide!

Ben - the trouble m1chet had was due to him removing the entire steering column stalk assembly. I only removed and refitted the wiper stalk itself, and had none of the problems that he spoke of.

However, it is possible that there's certain stalk assemblies that might not work for DIS. Like there is one that can accept Cruise Control (ie mine, as I have cruise that has been previously retrofitted) and one that can't (which mine had pre-CC) so I'm not sure if they'd both work.

Perhaps Nelson with his inside dealer knowledge will be able to tell us how many steering column stalk assemblies there are and what the differences are. Then maybe we can ascertain which cars can and can't accept a DIS retrofit. I spoke to Danksy earlier and he mentioned that AmD seemed to think "some cars could, some cars couldn't" when he asked about a retrofit for his old A4. Not a very scientific answer, but that might have been (inadvertedly) what they meant. In the end they didn't attempt it.

Hopefully between us we will be able to do more research and eventually be able to say definitively which ones do and don't work 169144-ok.gif

wouldnt mind the dis upgrade myself...look forward to your explanations!

Durrsaku what you think of your new steering wheel,is it the sline punched leather one? I love smlove2.gif mine best bit of lolly i spent in a while! lovely the feel of the punched leather...not in a kinky way mind! ROLLEY~14.GIF

still waiting on the arrival of the gear knob upgrade....germany isnt that faraway is it... jump.gif

By the way - the DIS that is available is actually option 2 - not option 1 like I originally though. So you get "lifetime" calculations which carry on until you manually reset it. I'm still not sure if this is a coding thing or not, but as I broke my VAG-COM cable this morning I won't be finding out anytime soon SAUER0421.GIFSAUER0421.GIF

I have a bit of time on my hands today, but I didn't take all the pictures I needed (in a bit of a rush last night) and I have to take the steering wheel off again (not quite straight) anyway so I'll take some more comprehensive pictures to go with the write-up. I'm also trying to do a bit of research into which steering control module panels can and can't accept DIS, basically so far it looks like if you have cruise, DIS will work, if you don't, it could be hit or miss as to whether you have a compatible module. Looking at ETKA shows several different modules.. some for Taxi's and hire cars confused.gif

Nice one Ben! 169144-ok.gif

I'm amazed it didn't have it already though, isn't yours a 1.8T Quattro Sport? Don't they come with DIS? confused.gif

Bear in mind that DIS is 10% optimistic, so 22mpg on DIS is roughly 20MPG real... crazy.gif

Yes it's a 1.8T Quattro Sport mate. DIS is an optional extra on all sports (as Sparky found out the hard way!).

Many people say DIS is optimistic, and they're probably right. However I think a lot of it has something to do with the way people refuel their cars. I've found on both a quattro and non-quattro cars that when the fuel light comes on, there's 13 litres left in the tank. In a 1.9 diesel, that's around 130 miles of reasonable driving. I've done 165 miles before, on the light. Obviously not the case with a petrol, but y'know ROLLEY~14.GIF

Unless calculations are 100% spot on calculated by miles driven and litres in the tank from a reciept (and on top of that, how many fuel pumps are 100% accurate) I reckon DIS might not be that far off..

If it's done from full it's irrelevent how much fuel is left in the tank.

For example, if you brim it ,and drive till half empty, and brim it again and work out how far you went and how much you had to put back in, then you'll have your MPG irrespective of how much was left in tank.

I checked mine over a solid month and it was consistantly 10% optimistic. Easy enough to work out if yours is though, just reset the trip when you fill up, and on the next fill just work out how much you put in and how far it took you.

As to DIS not standard, thats a bit tight. To me it's one of the defining Audi features. A well worthwhile retrofit.

Yes I see what you mean mate, what I meant is I think a lot of people probably don't work it out "properly" but if you've done it as scientifically as possible then I'll take your word for it smile.gif

And I agree, it is very tight. Particularly when all it takes is a wiper stalk.

Well done Shark, and as Ari says it should be std on all Audi's, although yours looks like an S4 read out with that mpg ooo.gif

My 1.8T QS is showing an average of 30mpg and that's trying to be economical. I thought these were a bit better than that on fuel.

I know how low is it blush.gif With my last car being a soot-chucker it's painful to see! To be fair though after I enabled it I just took it up the road to check it was functioning properly etc, so I only did about a mile and that was stop/start at junctions. After a 26 mile run to Sheffield this morning it's reading high 20's, but that's still not great for a 1.8T! We'll see how it goes over time, I'm expecting ~35 on motorway runs or which it'll get tomorrow, all the way to Southampton and back.

Ben, bear in mind the extra drag of the quattro will peg it back a bit.

My 2wd 1.8T Cabrio will do mid to high 30's (on the DIS) on a long run taking it easy, one very relaxed (was early) trip to the north, all motorway, I actually saw just over 40mpg on the DIS but that was steady 70mph.

So low to mid 30's is probably where you'll be on a run.

I reset the DIS2 on the day I picked it up with 22 miles on the clock. It is reading 28.3 mpg after 740 miles and the actual isn't far off that. I'll let the DIS2 run until the day I hand it back and see how the 2 figures compare 169144-ok.gif

I'm quite chuffed with 28.3 for a 2.0T quattro if I'm honest ROLLEY~14.GIF

Excellent news Shark! I'm pleased to hear you've got it all working. 169144-ok.gif

I think there are a couple of areas in VAG-COM which relate to the DIS function. Aside from enabling it, there is also some coding for level 1 and level 2. I think it's [17 Instruments] > [10 Adaption] > Channel 19 (See below):

Control Module Adaptation

Select 17 (Instrument Cluster)

Adaptation -> Function 10

-> Channel 19 (Misc)

xxxx?: Remote Clock

0 - Remote Clock not active

1 - Remote Clock active

xxx?x: Ambient Temperature

0 - no Display, Illumination inactive

1 - Display and Illumination active

xx?xx: Driver Information System (DIS)

0 - DIS 1

1 - Highline without DIS

2 - DIS 2

x?xxx: Board Computer

0 - only Level 2 (long time memory)

1 - Level 1 and 2

?xxxx: Illumination Option

0 - Needle and Scala only active at 'Light on"

1 - Needle already active at 'Ignition on'

2 - Scale already active at 'Ignition on'

3 - Scala (2. Map) and Needle at "ignition on" active

As for the modules that are compatible, I can't find the document again! ROLLEY~14.GIF

It's written by a Spanish guy, and explains which modules can be used to retrofit cruise control (and DIS). Saying that, I'm still not 100% whether DIS can be enabled on all steering control modules?

The problem I had with mine was due to removing/replacing the steering control module, which I had to do (or so I'm led to believe!). Otherwise, like you say Shark, it should be just a case of replacing the wiper switch unit.

Incidentally, the screen wash sensor should be retrofittable (if that's a word!). Looking on ELSA, it shows two components for the washer bottle sensor, a plug or a sensor.

The only problem I can see is getting to it... taking the front wing off is something I don't fancy doing!

So how did you break your VAG-COM cable incidentally??

I only ask, as I have 2 cables (one hex-can-usb which keeps breaking and is currently away for repair, and one ebay special which is just crap! I can only use it with version 311 and 409 (can only modify codes in 311).

A quick note on the SCSM codes, the part number is 8E0 953 549, followed by a version letter. I think 'N' is one that enables cruise control and full DIS. But there are loads of versions ('P' is another one I've come across which supports cruise and DIS). My old module was an 'F' (... that sounds like I'm swearing!).

Note: Grounding the washer bottle sensor
