bal5sidhu
After all the stories of encounters with Subaru imprezas, 330i's, Boxters etc (not to mention the occasional Bentley ) i thought it might be interesting to have a few examples of unusual suspects - cars you'd think the GTi could take but...... I'll nominate the new Honda Civic iCDTi. Was behind one today and, although traffic didn't allow for a real challenge, he gave me a few quick examples of diesel torque at work. Believe me, that thing can open up a serious gap before you know it and i struggled to close it. Gave me a newfound respect for family runabouts... NewNiceMrMe
In respect of torque the iCDTi is a very very impressive car. Firstly, it delivers 251 lbs/ft compared to the Golf's 204 lbs/ft - which is 23% more torque. Then if you compare weights, the gap widens to the Civic iCDTi having a 28% torque advantage. The Civic only actually has 114 bhp per ton though, so it can't compete with the Golf's 142 bhp per ton - but that's still only 28 bhp less! They're quite a little Q car....and look at the 0-62 time too...because they're only 1.2 seconds slower than a GTi. In a straight line, over a distance, of course the Golf will pull away - but it'd be a much closer contest than you might expect if considering looks or reputation alone. RedRobin
Surely there all sorts of unlikely cars which a GTI "couldn't take". Isn't it a lot down to the driver? There are some very skilled and trained drivers out there and so much also depends on the road conditions/circumstances and the risks some will take. collease
I saw a mk5 gti get done off the lights by a Jeep Cherokee which was very funny as they were both edging forward and at the end the bloke in the gti was looking like his world had been distroyed. stevie_d
As Red says, a lot is down to the driver. However, I think the 170bhp MKV derv, when it arrives, will give the GTI a run for its money. Of course, when you get to the corners the derv will be heavier up front and will tend to understeer more... Also, some cars maybe tuned, imagine a 270bhp Morego GTI going up against a Scooby WRX, I'd imagine it'd be close in the dry! However, any small hot hatch will pose a "threat" tbh and several of those big saloons pack a fair punch.

nhs
Any of the A4 2.0T are around same as GTI manual And the 3.0 TDI Quattros presumably sell more automatics that manuals - why Audi didn't put DSG in to these is very odd
Simonl
i got sick and tired of having to spend £20 of petrol everytime i had to outrun a lippy diesel lighweight. They always give you a run for your money (unless your in something very exotic) and use next to no petrol in the process. My GTI on the other hand will often keep up, often beat, sometimes destroy most other other cars, without having to use £20 of optimax. Sure it won't beat porsches or ferraris (maybe the odd aston ) but whilst they're using £50 of juice, i'm having fun trying to keep up. The GTI will always do a good job of trying, and will often earn a little respect in doing so. I tried it on with a 997 Turbo on Sunday, my that was fun. He was gone off the lights and into the distance before my DSG even engaged 2nd ironically though he had to stop for petrol 1 mile later , but my that puppy could fly. It's nice seeing what those things can do once in a while... (helped by a little teasing from me!)

Not talking about road racing like maniac chavs.

fresco1
I lost out in a straight line against an Audi allroad Quattro 2.5TDi (the more powerful one, but can't think what BHP it is - 170+ ?). Only because it was being driven by my neighbour who drives like a nut anyway and won't back off once over the ton, and she's fit too. I let her win. She deserved to, just for the kudos! Something about being raised in the Southern Hemi too - they all drive like they're about to be car-jacked.

stevie_d
There maybe a few dealer examples about, I saw an XK on the roads a while before they were released, but I think some 997 owner had just stuck a turbo badge on his car
