mixit
Now I know I haven't exactly looked after these pipes as much as the rest of my car, but I don't expect the salt and bad weather of the last 3 months to do this to them. as you can see I have mauled the right hand pipe with Autosol and wire wool Yes, I hated doing it to it but nothing else would shift the grime. Does anyone think I have a claim against VW for a new rear silencer? Also, I assumed these were stainless steel ? Any thoughts / suggestions? frazervisser
If im honest with you i don't think its VWs fault, i think its just down to not cleaning them enough. Ive had my car for 14 months now and i use megs metal polish on them when them need it (thanks to MrMe for the tip ) and they look like this These were cleaned last week, each night i have a cloth in the garage that i wipe the soot away with, so it does not build up, it takes 2 second to do but i think the results show! Paddy_Driver
Hi Mixit, Sorry to see what has happened to the pipes. Not really much help now, but I have found that some brasso metal polish (Name should not throw you off as it is does all metals - chromed etc too) every few weeks keeps them in good condition. Unfortunately I think your's are beyond that now, & I do not think VW will entertain you at all but always worth a try. I am fairly sure there are stainless steel / chromed sleeves you can get to put over these - good boy racer approved kit Best of Luck! CMC950
Are there any stainless steel tail caps available anywhere that will cover them? Some DTM ones would look good!

mixit
Whilst I admit neglect, I still say they shouldn't have pitted so badly over the winter. Good point LeMan.. I will consider that. CMC950... You've got a point there... although not DTM.. it's not a cavalier M8
nbetts
Mixit - I agree with you... unfortunately the pipes look like quality but are infact very cheap... they should be able to take a bit more rough treatment then that. Sure there is neglect but I am not going to polish my Exhaust tips every night. Poor show VW.
NewNiceMrMe
Yup, as has been said it's all about maintenance. 7 months on and the pipes of the 6 still look like this... Polishing every night isn't what is needed. Polishing once a week, or once a fortnight even, with Meguiars NXT Metal Polish will bring up any chrome finished pipe like new. It's when you don't use such polish for 3-4 weeks that you'll get the onset of rust and corrosion. On saying that, I do think those pipes looking particularly poor. You can buy the tips though can't you? If you can, just get a new set and look after then a little more this time.

NewNiceMrMe
Incidentally Mixit, if you go out and buy some Meguiars NXT Metal Polish today (little blue tub with a bright green lid) you'll be suprised just how good you could have those pipes looking in 20 minutes. mixit
As I said ...Whilst I admit neglect, I still say they shouldn't have pitted so badly over the winter. And I will not polish my exhausts every night. Some of us not only work 12 hour days, 6 days a week but also have a life. I used to clean the R32 pipes with the same frequency and they looked as good as new, the day I PX'd.

Mine get a polish every 2 weeks on average, and NXT will lift most of the crap that accumulates. It's 5-10 minutes every two weeks, so you can still have a life too... Anyway, it's your car and your choice, so if you don't want to polish them then I guess you're only looking at the results of such a decision (despite the fact I do happen to think they must be a poor finish in the first place to have corroded as badly as they have). RedRobin
You beat me to it, Mark! M...Mm....Mmm....Milltek are the ones to get if you went high grade stainless steel exhaust system throughout and minimum maintenance (Shame that Millteks sound so crap! ). OEM exhaust isn't stainless steel and has chromed (I think) tips which should be theoretically replaceable? This is what Millteks look like after a few thousand miles:
Markallain
Is the general consensus that the with the MK5 the quality of the materials and finish is that much poorer than the MK4?
Markallain
Yeah Red I see it as an opportunity to make a change! Is that your garage in the pic above ?
Timski
I agree - regular cleaning is the key to clean pipes. I'm not sure whether there's been any reduction in the quality of the finish on the exhaust tips on the MK5 but without sounding like a smug b@stard, the single pipe on my MK4 Anni (3.5 yrs old) looks the same as when I had it new. I use Autoglym Super Resin polish on mine - whether or not this is the right thing to do I don't know but it's worked a treat on my motor. Some cleaning tips for gleaming tips! fjfr
I never clean my pipes on my S3. They look fine - a wash and they look new.
RedRobin
Mark32 > Consensus of opinion is probably that the standard of interior finish on the Mk4 R32 is better than the Mk5. "Is that your garage in the pic above ?" > I wish! It's Ray West's with 4WD mega neddies rolling road. NewNiceMrMe
[ QUOTE ] NXT metal polish, i take it Halfords sell it. [/ QUOTE ] I believe so, although I bought mine online. Edited to add: Actually, beware of a wasted trip there - because I've just done an online search and they don't seem to stock it (but it could just be the online store). Might be best to ring them before going if you were planning on trying to buy some.

Snoopy
Powerflow part of Tyrespot will replace the end caps on your exhuast for very little money. They have a HUGE range of them to choice from of good quality. Infact i have 2 of the powerflow ones we got for a car of ours (I still have not fitted them ) they have sat for near 3 years maybe more on the ground outside in the mud/dirt/grass/snow/hail/salt of our industrial unit and they still looked like new when i spotted them yesterday.
