Briggs
Hi all, Great Forum! I'm getting ready to take the plunge and swap my MkIV Gti for a MkV GTi (or maybe a R32). My dilema, amongst other things, is whether to go for a used / demo or order from new. From looking at VW used database, it seems the used prices are as much as the list price! Anyone manage to get a good deal? I know the waiting list for new was a long one but is that still the case? And for those who've gone for DSG, would you recommend it? I need to try for myself obviously, but wondering if it's worth the extra cost? Many thanks - just doing a final bit of research before heading down to VW! jimmyp
Welcome to TSN Briggs, If you have questions on the R32, feel free to pop over to the .:R forum and chat away, as for the GTI questions, you are in the right place and the lads will make you feel right at home and help you out as much as they can. Enjoy...

oxfordlad
Briggs - for the last year I was in the same situation as you wondering on what to do! In the end I ordered end of last month from euroimports.co.uk. Do yourself a favour and at least ring them for some advice as you will save thousands. Used prices for Mk5GTI are just stupid still at the moment, which is great for owners, but no so for buyers. For the same money you can almost import a new one! rather than having 10k miles on it and being a year old. Also do some searches on importing on these forums, it will all help! Welcome! TwoSheds
Hi Briggs, Welcome to TSN Have DSG & would genuinely recommend it, well worth the extra IMO. Enjoy your test drives.
Ballistic
Briggs I agree with you on dealers still asking silly money for nearly new/demonstrator cars. For not much more you can buy brand new to your ideal spec. I ordered end of Jan 06 and it took 7.5 weeks for delivery to dealer. Some UK dealers will offer a discount, shop around. Try the manual and DSG and see what you think. IMO DSG is the way to go and offers the best of all worlds plus its great around town and changes gear faster than a manual. Oli
My car took 8-9 weeks to come through, exactly to the spec I wanted (Euroimports, so saved best part opf £3000 as well). Go for DSG, I love mine, even in D mode it is a pleasure to drive!
Muppetboy
Briggs I'd go new (import or dealer doesn't matter imo) as VW is charging silly money for used. You'll be able to spec what you like and having a brand new car is just the business! But whatever you do just get yourself a GTI, you wont regret it! Tarmac_Terrorist
Hi Briggs. I was in exactly the same position in Jan. I really didn't want to spend more than 19k and wanted to buy from a franchised dealer. Soon realised that I'd have to pay the new price for a used car say 9 months old with 8 or 9k on the clock. I decided to wait & buy new. Ordered Jan expecting delivery end April / early May. Worth being patient and buying new IMO.

I must admit I don't like the S mode tbh, I was doing 60 on a back road with even throttle and I put her into S mode, it changed down to 3rd. I mean, wtf??? I have 2.5k on ours now and have only used "S" when my wife was not in the car (5 days overdue now on our first baby so S mode and heavy acceleration is not for her!!!) but I was amazed too how it just dropped the gears way down... if you want to pass or just generally take off then just drop to "S" and floor it and it takes off like a rocket! Great Stuff Happy and Safe Motoring Paddy PS - before anyone starts telling me to go look after my wife, all we can do is sit around house and wait and thus just keep an eye on TSN

[/ QUOTE ] I drive in D mode 95% of the time, and when I overtake, or simply want to take some country roads at speed, I use the paddles, until Ive finished my manoevre, and then I switch striaght back into D. Its so smooth you hardly even notice the gear changes, I love it. Most people I have taken out in it or had a drive cant believe how quick and slick the gearbox is. A friend of mine has a 996 Carrera 4 Tip and the DSG box is loads better.!!

Simonl
I love the paddles, racing up a back road, hitting a bend, hard on the brakes, crank it down a couple, blipping on the throttle, flooring it out the other side with a nice rush of power and an exhaust blip on the upchange... can't beat it. Briggs, it takes months to appreciate DSG in all it's glory, but it is fantastic. Also got to add, saw a couple of black R32's at the weekend, they looked , much better than in the pics. redragon
Briggs, Doesn't matter new or used as long as it's a good car. if used you can get it instantly. DSG is the way to go. i love the "S" mode but i drive in D 95% of the time. "S" =
Briggs
Thanks everyone for your input. More and more I'm thinking 'get the order in now, get the spec I want'!! I'm getting excited already!
oxfordlad
Hehe, go on take the plunge! I would try a test drive the manual and DSG like I did, however not being like the above I sent for the manual gearbox. Partly because I prefer it and I was on a strict budget I will be happy none the less. You given euroimports a call?
