RossOliver Posted May 4, 2006 Report Share Posted May 4, 2006 Hey, I recently purchase my first car, a 1999 Golf GTi (115bhp). One thing i've noticed since I got it home is that when turning on the ignition, it seems to stick on for an extra half second or so, making a nasty grinding noise (like if you turn the ignition when the car is already running). The key itself isn't sticking, so I imagine it's a timing issue somewhere. Any idea where I should start looking? oxfordlad Posted May 4, 2006 Report Share Posted May 4, 2006 My current car has done this for the last 45,000 miles (same engine as yours)and I just put up with it as AFAIK it is not doing any harm. RossOliver Posted May 4, 2006 Author Report Share Posted May 4, 2006 It reminds me of when you put the car into reverse when your rolling forwards or if you give it a few revs before hand - horrible grinding sound! I've also just noticed something else slightly off with the car. It appears the driver side door is slightly bent down, by about 3mm so it doesn't open/close smoothly or flush with the rest of the car. I imagine it's something to do with the weight of the door (since it's the 3 door model). I found an article about this one which says to shim the hinge.
