Quick (silly) question about rear wiper motor

Hey,

I just replaced the rear windscreen wiper motor on my 1999 Golf GTi and everything seems to be sound, except the linkage rod (I think that's what it's called) doesn't seem to rotate with the wiper. It just sprays directly upwards. Is this normal? I'm not sure if it used to rotate because the wiper didn't work when I bought the car...
