Cruise Control Question

I have a B6 Passat with the Highline computer and cruise control. The speed is displayed in the bottom left hand corner of the MFD, in a large font when it's active and a small font when it isn't.

A friend has an A3 with the Highline computer and it doesn't display the speed though. There must be 'Highline'and 'Highline+' computers!

I have the green icon on all the time in my gti!

Even when I'm driving normally (not using cruise control) its still there, though if I switch cruise control off (on the top of the left stalk) the icon disappears. Is this normal? I'd have though it'd make sense for th icon only light up when the cruise control was working to keep you at a steady speed, whereas mine is on all the time.

Hi - no there is no read out on the Highline display, just the cruise symbol on the dash.

I've got cruise on mine and I find it especially useful when driving through built up areas and those evil roads that contain loads of camaras and mobile 'Smile You're on Camera' vans e.g. the A605 to Peterborough!!

I have cruise on mine, I had a play with it on the 160 mile journey back home from initially picking the car up and that's probably the only time I've used it. I kept having to reset it so many times due to traffic it was pointless!

....Me too. I find it more of a nuisance than an aid. It's not difficult to drive to a conscious speed.

Yeah I do. I've had cruise on the last 3 motors I've had, 1 vw and 2 Audi's. It's just a case of getting used to it. It's relaxing, it's keeps your licence safe (it's so easy to let your foot relax and before you know it you're doing over the ton!!) and it does help with fuel economy. I agree, not all road situations lend themselves to using it but when you can use it it's great. I love it.

....Then why did you buy a Mk5 GTI ?

Don't get me wrong - I respect you loving Cruise. Each to their own and I can't be bothered to learn how to use it. The Speed Warning drove me nuts as well - I gave that one up in the first 100 miles.

Why did I buy it......?!

Handles like it's on rails, extremely quick when you want it to be, relaxed when you don't. Seats five people in comfort, swallows plenty of luggage, amazing looks, residual values, servicing costs and I just love what the Golf is all about.

My advise - don't tick the cruise option box next time and save yourself £270.

I agree with speed limit alarm - the last two Audi's had it on and I think I used it once on the first car - couldn't beleive that some electronics engineers probably developed that idea for 2 years and got paid for doing it!! What a waste of time.

I have cruise control and I would recommend it.

But then I am living in Germany and frequently travel on the autobahns. Just take it up to speed and click the button.

It lets your legs rest rather than sitting there in one position for hours.

It makes a big difference on the right road when you do a long journey.

One of the other things I like about the Golf - it can be a relaxing cruiser.....

well I have to confess that i like the cruise. My first car with it and I think its great, especially just having driven to Montpelier and back! It is so much more relaxing on motorways just to set the speed and let the car go!. And you are quite right - the green light is on all time time the thing is switched on - I leave it on too!

Totally agree, couldnt do without cruise. Great on the motorways and also really good when in built up area, means you can watch for kids running around on the pavement and not run em over instead of looking at the speedometer. You can also hover your foot on the brake when necessary and theoretically get to it a tad quicker. Also far easier to concentrate on the road and not worry about speed cameras.

100% agree, I use it all the time great tool to prevent getting flashed esp. on M25 J10 - 16.

Its also better for mpg on long journey, the car can do better mpg at say 80mph than you can by trying to hold 80mph with your right foot.

Lastly your average speed is higher if you set cruise on a non busy route. Human nature is to ease off then re-apply and use more fuel and average speed drops.

If you do alot of motorways it is great, and DSG will let you change gear while in cruise which is great if you sense the need to overtake and want to do so while in cruise and come back to same speed...I like it! Can't do that in a manual. ECLIPSe.gif

....WOW! I didn't know that. Yet another clever thing that DSG offers 169144-ok.gif. Perhaps I should try Cruise one day. It just seems very unnatural to me after 40 years of driving. Plus I had a near death experience in a very crude form of cruise control in a sit-up-and-beg Rover 1940s model. I narrowly missed possibly killing a number of people.
