j1mmy
I have a A4 Avant sport 2.5 TDI and every now and then when I start the car, it stalls immediately (ie cuts out). I try to restart, then engine fires then cuts out before I can even rev it. It usually does this two to three times then starts fine and I have no problems, and it does not effect the way the car drives (ie no missfires etc). Does anyone have any ideas as it goes in for service on Monday 5 June and I want to be able to direct the techie to the problem without ensuing additional labour charges to fault find. peterb
That sounds like a dodgy immobiliser sensor coil in the ignition lock - a particular problem on the B5 model and early A8s. Repair involves replacing the entire ignition lock assembly.
j1mmy
It's a late B6 model, any idea on cost for doing the repair ? It;s only 3.5 years old so would be well peed off if I have to send out on this sort of thing. Could it be related to the charcole filter on the oil breather ? peterb
Not sure on costs - my old A4 was showing this problem at a bit over three years old - I just lived with it until I traded the car for the A6. It has been said that the wear on the lock might be accelerated by having extra weight hanging from the ignition lock - like a bunch of keys on key ring. Nelson_R32
The problem is the reader coil on the ignition barrel breaking up as peterb said. You'd be looking at £87.00 for the part plus the labour to fit and code it. I'd get the part diagnosed and on order ASAP though as one to key number can take up to 2 weeks to arrive. Hope this helps
Keith_S3
Hi i have a similar problem with an s3 only happens occasionly but when it does i have to hold the key for a prolonged period to get the car to start probably upto 30/40 secs!! do you think this could be the same problem? cheers Keith
peterb
Doesn't sound like it. The symptoms with the immobiliser failure (well, on my old A4) was that the engine would fire whilst the key was in the 'start' position, but as soon as the key went back to the 'run' position, the engine would cut out. The problem with your S3 sounds like it could be ignition/fuel related. OTOH, could this starting difficulty be occuring the next time after the engine has been run for just a few seconds (eg. after manoeuvering on the driveway/into/out of garage etc.)? I'm not sure of the reason for this particular symptom, but I have experienced it on more than one car.
jimbo2112
Hi All, First post here ... looks like me and Keith_S3 have the same issue. Only mine is with a 2.5 A4 TDi. The car takes about 1-2 minutes to start sometimes. Good job the battery is strong! Some times it starts first time. Has only been happening for a week or so. Any ideas?
