Hi Guys, I am relatively new here... Been reading lots of posts, but Only just starting to add my own!

I have got an S3 (2001, 210BHP) I need to stick some new plugs in it as it is starting to misfire a bit and it has got another 7k to go till its 40k service, so I thought I would just sling some in anyhow... 2 questions for you...

A) What plugs would you recommend?

B) Are there any potential horrors in changing the plugs? I am fairly reasonable with a spanner so I am not too intimidated, I just want to be prepared!!!

Thanks in advance!

Im looking into changing mine for next service as they are only changed on the 40K bigger avs services.

get Audi spark plugs and settle for nothing less.

www.vagparts.com have them in their shop for about £32

It appears you dont have to gap them anymore, but they should be done up to 30Nm

As i understand it, the only hinderance is moving the ancilleries out the way thats bolted over the top of Cylinders 3 and 4.

I think the recommended ones are NGK items?

I would say if you're working on the plugs yourself, take care when moving the various loom wires. Mine have been reported as being a bit brittle (will get them examined properly this weekend). There have been a few instances of TT/S3 looms needing replacing. So be careful when handling the loom wiring as the loom is a few hundred and audi will quote you TEN hours to replace it!! blush.gif

yes i think Audi use NGK plugs.

Ps misfire may not be your plugs.

It could also be a early sign of coil packs playing up.

The are are common fault. But certainly no harm changing the plugs incase.

Vag-com / diagnostics should also tell you cylinder source of missfire if its that bad.

Cheers guys... I was going to buy the VAG plugs, like you say they are the safest route, and if someone has found 10BHP out of spark plugs, then they are a better man than me!

I have heard of the Bosch plugs making the car run a little cleaner, but I think that is either being ultra sensitive or slightly pedantic!

I had thought that it might be the coil packs, but like you say, there is no harm in changing the plugs especially as they are only £30 odd... Tackle the cheapest point first! Ha!

Thanks for the point on the wiring harness, I will be careful!

I will let you know how straight forward the whole op is, shouldn't imagine it is too bad.

  • 2 weeks later...

Update:

Just changed the plugs... Took 1/2 and hour Easy as you like. As Paul correctly said the most time consuming bit was removing the brackets etc that are over cylinders 3 & 4.

All you need is a 5mm Allen Key (T bar is probably the best, either that or a socket and extension), and a 10mm socket. Then a flat head screw driver removes the cable from the coil pack (these clips are the brittle parts that Mollox mentioned - 2 of mine were already missing but the plug is a snug enough fit for it not to be too much of a problem.) A reasonable length extension (I used 12" but 6" would be fine) and a plug socket.

Its worth noting that the coil packs aren't screwed in, you simply have to pull them out (bit daunting if you think there is a chance they might be held in some other way but they aren't!)

Seems to have solved the misfire and cured the starting hesitation... Cheers for your help!
