Paul
Having taken inspiration from quite a few people, including Waks caliper painting page And our own Tyresmoker ~ Durrsaku and many TT forum members, I painted my rear calipers back in the May bank holidays. I really wanted to tidy them up, after three years of use, and they didnt look particularly as they were. I followed Durrsaku, and bought the Hamerite red oxide primer, to accompany the Japlac signal red enamel paint. Fridays task was clean the calipers from the 3years of crap. So one wheel at a time, (because all breaking when parked is only on the rear!) so brake cleaner fluid, wire brush, and rotary wire brushes on a drill, making sure to wear goggles and a breathing mask! once done masked them all up and painted on the red oxide primer, in a good thick coat. Saturday task applied 2 coats of the Japlac enamel over a period of the instructed 6 hrs, and then a topcoat about an hour after the last coat. Whilst waiting the 6 hrs between, removed the Porsche rotors completely, drilled out all the holes, cleared of brake dust, deglazed the rotors, reassembled, and touched up the the Porsche Big red calipers with the same Japlac Signal red enamel. The Japlac enamel, was a excellent match for the Powder coated and lacquered Porsche 4 pots. It sealed where stones had chipped away any lacquer or paint. After that, car was left overnight, and not driven for circa 20 Hrs to allow drying. Much more than required, but I didnt need to use the car so it worked well. Result is a brilliant match to the front porkers, and a really waxy glossy, almost plastic coated type finish, thats easy to keep clean and looks great! Porsche 993 bi turbo "big reds" Standard rears painted to match.
s3geezer
Nice one Paul - seeing as my S3 needs new discs and pads (which I will do within a couple of months) I have decided to print off your guide and I'm going to do mine too!!! They look the nuts, plus mine are all black and horrible. Plus the new RS4 wheels I've got can't have skanky brake callipers behind them!! One thing - where did you buy the paint from? Paul
The Japlac is cheap enough! I think both the Hammerite red oxide primer and the Japlac enamel cost about £7 each. Paint was from B&Q your also need some small brushes, and some masking tape. The art is in the masking up.
Paul
[ QUOTE ] Good job Paul. How's the overall effect now? Any pics showing both wheels? [/ QUOTE ] Overall effect is spot on!, and excellent match. I didnt like the manky discoloured and tarnished audi calipers after 3 years use. Im not trying to make it something its not, just make it match the front and leave it clean and smart. Here is a picture where you can just make them both out, its a subtle mod. All my other pictures are funny angles, and dont get both calipers in shot together.
