[Audi A3/S3] Electric Fan Control Unit blowing fuses

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with fan control units?

I noticed the other day that one of the 30 Amp fuses in the batery compartment was blown and any replacements blow immediately. Spoke with the local Audi garage and they stated it may be the Fan Control Unit, a mere £98 for the part and it's on back order till the end of July.

Anyway I found out the hard way that it most porbably is this unit as my air con no longer blows cold and the radiator fans don't come on, resulting in me having to sit at the side of the road for 1 1/2 hours for the little minx to cool down the other day.

Has anyone else had issues with this item? If so, did replacing it solve the issue, or should I be looking for what may have caused this to fail in the first place? The last thing I want to do is pay the best part of £100 only for it to blow again.

OK, got a little further with this.

Upon more investigation last night I found a piece of rubber trim stuck in one of the fans on the raditor. This piece of rubber was stopping the fan from rotating. Removing the rubber allows the fan to rotate by hand, but it's still blowing fuses. If I remove the cable to this fan then the fuses stop blowing and the other fan rotates when the aircon is on.

I'm assuming I have two fans, one to keep the radiator cool when the engine starts over heating and the other for the aircon.

So by disconnecting this fan I've been able to prove the fan controller unit is OK, but it looks like my over heating problem is still with me.

Does this mean I need to remove the front of the car to change this fan? Or is there some knuckle scrapping way of doing this?
