Another theft !

I've installed a simple but effective wireless CCTV system at home. They are very cheap to buy, available everywhere (Argos etc) and I'm sure this would deter a proportion would be thieves. By law you have to display small window stickers on your property so any 'would be's' would know about it. Still, it's a pitty that we have to go to such measures to proptect what's yours. frown.gif Bring back the town stocks I say!

Where did you get wind of this Ken? There are quite a few GTI's on the Irish roads now - and their tailpipes are always black NONO3.GIF and in need of a good shining.

I always try to stay aware of security and like TT have a CCTV system on the house - 4 camera's with 30 days recording, although I think that thieves can be so stupid/non aware that they do not think houses will have CCTV. GTI is kept on inside of other car most nights too and keys for both are in separate parts of house.

Best keep alarm on partguard at night and hopefully as scum is trying to get in the alarm will go off.

Paddy this was a friend of a friend and the alarm was on in the house and went off , they didn't give S**t.

You are dealing with complete scumbags, and I don't think CCTV bothers them too much. I reckon the more hassle you create such as security bars , park another car behind the GTI and loads of locks on the doors etc works best

Anyway I would have though this would have stopped by now due to the amount of GTI's on the road. I mean in terms of BMW's etc a standard GTI is hardly huge huge money expecially when you could buy a secondhand one for under €30k now. I wonder who they are selling them to ?

Hi Ken,

Thanks for info, this subject really does p**s me off to think that these low life are out there willing to do this to you and there is nothing we can do to defend ourselves in our own houses cause we are then the villain. Guess I better make sure GTI is always behind the Volvo then - even when I do drag myself half asleep out of the recliner and wonder how many seconds before I can be in my bed - s**t, then I think about having to move the cars...

When I had a specialist ICE/Security guy out at my house making some changes on the car security system he did say too that greatest deterrent is having other cars in the way or a security post, but me wonders that if they are going to bother confronting you with alarm going off etc - then surely they will just move the other car and pull out post (when they get key to that too).

Anyway, like ye all say - these are low life scum bags, and deserve a good beating if they come into someone elses house - it should be like the US where if someone comes into your house then you can shoot them openfire.gif

Is there an easy way to immobolise the car by pulling out a fuse or something ?

If so which fuse please ?

I used to to do this with a previous car when parking at work in a slightly dodgy area. Just slipped out a particular fuse and carried it around with me.

Jonny, I have often thought this too - I reckon you could easily get in under the steering wheel and put a simple on/off switch on an ignition cable - I know they can't be hot wired these days but there must be some cable in that area which will prevent ignition if clipped.

Not that I am condoning doing this because no doubt the cable you clip is on one of those expensive and hard to get VW wiring looms.

I reckon these days the scum might not be as technically minded cause now they do not have to worry about getting past alarms and immobilisers etc - they just break into the house and steal the keys, then deliver on to the next person in the scum chain so effectively any slight change that makes the car not start will maybe throw them off - again, I am only speculating.

Another idea I thought of is get a dumb key from the dealers - leave it on the hall table or if scum breaks in then give them that one, basically it will not unlock or start the car and there is nothing they can do then - except maybe beat you up smirk.gif

More of my thoughts...

I suppose it depends if you have kids or not m8. If someone is prepared to break into my house for some car keys then I leave them where they will quickly find them. The last thing I want is to confront someone in our bedroom or worse, the kids rooms. I am more scared what I will do to them rather than the other way round. I dont want to do time for protecting my kids, house and car.

Heard of another theft last night in Dublin . Again a fairly agressive house breakin and take the keys. The thieves did not appear to be bothered who they woke up. Very disturbing !

Hey Ken,

Was this the Red 05 GTi stolen from the south side. I think it was stolen on Thursday evening ??

My Mark4 GTi was stolen in this way. Broke in through the front door and took the keys to both cars. I jumped out of bed to see both cars heading down the drive and a Landcruiser in the road blocking the road so that they could exit at speed. That car had about 5 blokes in it. 8 other houses in my area were done that night ( I live in rural Hertsfordshire ) A very well planned series of raids.

One car had a tracker so that was found 5 days later with no damage, the GTi was found 6 months later in a lock up in Luton with some class A drugs under the front seat, prompting another visit from PC plod to find out if they were mine !

I now have a large gate, alarm, CCTV and a routine every night and day for double locking the doors and windows.

I still drive 2 desirable cars and take the attitude that they will either be back or another gang will case my house.

Take every precaution you can and be careful out there

Somebody tried to steal my gti without the keys from an underground car park

€9,000 damage caused to it when they cut the wiring loom

Since I got it back I stuck a wheel lock on it as a visual deterrent but it was scuffing the steering wheel so now I just have a big chain around the steering wheel to act as a visual deterrent rather than believing it would actually stop them

(Have been away of late, so have had little access to TSN ... !)

Thefts in Dub are a bit of a worry, as I am due to drag mine over there in a couple of weeks. I'm originally from Dublin, and I know that having a nice yellow plate on the rear (let alone a GTI badge) can be enough to get the tea-leaves dribbling (i.e. they'll think it's foreign / full of camera) when in fact it will be Supavalu bags ....

Okay, mine is fitted with anti-blast glass now, but genuine question would be: should I take the shiny red UK plate GTI with obvious enhancements and try parking it in LIffey Valley, or should I bring the wifes Land Rover??

Help .. !!

Hi Fresco,

Would never let the wife take ours to Liffey Valley - besides the fact that car park spaces are very tight in there, it is also notorious for having a car break in problem - mind you that is a problem everywhere, but would not be rushing to Liffey Valley.

You are more likely to have the problem of scum hoping for camera etc, but you will have same problem with Land Rover.

Dublin is now very multinational grin.gif Loads of foreign reg's - mostly polish and latvian.

Regards

Paddy
