AnArtist1
GOT AN ENGINE RATTLE NOW!!!!! Do you know anything about low rev engine rattles? This occurs when gently accelerating, it is more obvious up a gradient. Not having a good S8 day today!!!
Muppet_man
Can you narrow down an area it seems to be coming from. Belt idler wheels can rattle under load. Let me know.
AnArtist1
From the drivers seat it seems to come from the engine at foot level if that makes any sense. Revving at a standstill, head under the bonnet does not create the rattle. A couple of booms from the exhaust but no rattle. The rattle is really obvious on gradients or under load. Its a clattering/rattle that only comes when gas is added. The cars performs as it should but with a very disconcerting noise. Cheers
SneakyMcC
Could it be coming from the gearbox?
Ska
What about exhaust heat shields my dads old E class does the same thing. Turned out to be the zorst shield next to the down pipes... bloody annoying sound too
quattronutter
might be a loose/ broken baffle in one of the exhaust silencers?
AnArtist1
I have got to do a fairly long drive today, will keep an ear open for all the noises you guys have said. I will have my AA card close too!!
StuartL
If the car shakes or vibrates too I'd say gearbox/clutch. If it doesn't I'd say exhausts have to be favourite.
AnArtist1
I think you're correct. It must be something exhaust related. The car performs as good normal. Didn't clatter at low revs until it was warmed up fully which is even stranger!??!!

AnArtist1
Nearly a year!? 61,000 miles total. Been no problem at all. RAC man identified a 'rotating' clatter from with in the gear box housing. only occured when gas was added. He had never come accross this type of problem ever, especially not in a high performance 60000 mile car! It was taken away to Audi yesterday morning. Today I have a Ford Focus LX. (not quite the same par of vehicle I was told I would get?) But at least I am mobile. Just waiting for the call from Audi: "Sorry our technicians could'nt find any faults." AnArtist1
As soon as I heard the 'rattle' I have taken it easy. So can't tell if performance has been effected. As for the Gearbox service, I was in negotiations about the ATF change but haven't had it done yet. The whole car was serviced 2 months ago and last week I got new front brakes & that is when I told them about the rattle!!

ronmcl
Ouch - sounds expensive! Has it just deteriorated or did it get bumped? It's too easy to hit them off the ground on narrow roads.
cruiser647
[ QUOTE ] It's the catalytic converter!!! [/ QUOTE ] Thank feck for that! So much for RAC man! Can you live with the rattle? How much for a replacement CAT - are they one of those things where you should get both sides done!!!
