Supermoto! Turning to the dark side

Has anyone gone from sports bike to supermoto?

My brothers just got a KTM 640 and to be honest it's a total laugh.

I don't have time anymore for those nice 300 mile runs, and most of riding now is work and back and quick blasts out which a supermoto should be ideal for.

After seven years of my Blade i think i need a change FIREdevil.gif

I got a Pegaso 650 which is a blast but find it suffers badly for any sort of dual carraigeway - even 10-15 miles if not around town is a struggle - may "stradarise" it as it can't be any worse but I would see how your brother fares over time before making the switch

Had an hour session at the yamaha supermoto school at last years bike show, since then i've been itching to go back to that style of bike. The only thing that turns me away from them is the maintenance issue of the bikes.

It does seem to be a compromise between performance and maintenance, a balls out 450 would be nice but rebuilding the engine every 1000 miles ain't much fun.

If I'm to get one i think it will be a KTM 625 or 660 SMC, both offer enough performance and the LC4 engine is quite reliable by all accounts.

Ive been out on our lads a few times and it sits happily at 90, and is as quick as my Blade up to 60-70 which should suit my needs fine.

I think the search may begin.

I borrowed from my mates a KTM, Honda XR and a Husqvarna I spent a day on each, definitely get one with an electric start.

As an ex-motocross rider did not think it would bother me but it did.

Out of all the bikes I tried the KTM 640 seemed the best to me.

90 mph no problems get on a tight back road and leave the sports bikes behind, much to the annoyance of my mate on the R1 behind me.

But not for every one.

I've followed a few SM's on track days..... On a tight circuit like Rockingham or sections of Cadwell they are so quick through the bends.... They're also quite off-putting to follow.... different line, look all awkward with a boot out etc.... a real distraction sometimes. Wouldn't mind having a bash though - I bet they laugh all day long thrashing sports bikes with three times the power.

I moved over as well. Changed my ZX7R for an XR400 s/m. Brilliant fun, but no top end. Bit like getting back in an old Mini and driving at 99% all the time. Combiation of bad back and driving ban meands that it's not been out for a year.

Top man!

I first started riding SM's in 1994, they're the nuts! I had a Gilera NordWest then a CR500 SM then was off bikes for about forever. Now back on a really ratty XR6 blush.gif

I've had Blades-n-stuff. I'd still have an early blade too!
