davyk31
My car has developed a strange quite loud rattle from the rear when going over bumps. You would swear the jack is bouncing around the boot or something but its all secured properly. I need to ring my dealer tomorrow but just enquiring if anyone has any ideas. I am thinking its the exhaust loose or a heatshield or a suspension component. Car drives perfectly well, I am just watching the mirror to see what falls off!!! .
R32North
If its the exhaust or heat sheild..... take a look underneath. Just get a small / soft hammer and tap away, if some is loose, damage or what-no-t then you'll be able to spot it. Plus, when you do take it into a garage to get it fixed you'll know what needs done and there's no way you can be ripped off!!!
Paddy_Driver
Had similar on my other car - a Volvo - and turned out to be one of the rear shocks. I thought all the same as you about the jack rattling etc and totally emptied and stripped boot of all components but still there. Just managed to blag it under warranty but it was a shock. Make sure that if it is a shock then they replace both sides cause the new one will show up the older one and it will go eventually too. Then again, might be the exhaust Paddy
davyk31
My car has only done 2000 miles so hopefully its not a shock, altho it will be a warranty issue anyway. Phoned my dealer. As usual their customer service is crap and they cannot collect the car. I am too busy at work to get out for half a day to take it to them. Pointed out to the service receptionist that the salesman promised pick up of the car anytime it was needed and she told me that was a sales pitch!!! NOt sure her general manager would appreciate honesty like that! If anyone is buying a VW in Northern Ireland PM me and I will tell you who to avoid as all I have had are arguments from the Service receptionist. Cagey
I know from just having fitted a new exhaust that there isn't much clearance between the top of the back box and the heatshielding - also, the heatshield itself isn't tight against the boot floor, as you can give it a push and it moves something like 20mm before it touches. Could be a combination of a loose exhaust mounting and the movement of the heatshield. Or it could be something totally unrelated. Certainly worth getting it checked out, or at the very least, taking a quick look underneath to see if you can spot anything obvious.

Calm Chris
Sounds like the heat shield. Have you been anywhere near roads with the sleeping policeman / road bumps Should be replaced since it's warranty, so don't let them just weld it up. davyk31
Haven'd driven over any Policemen, sleeping or otherwise! It just occured yesterday after the car had been fine during the previous drive. I have knocked things around the rear end to try to find the problem but nothing seems too loose. Is the heatshield right along the car or just at rear of exhaust? Phoned another local dealer, they cannot look at it until the end of next week. I told him I was concerned about safety but he just said they had no chance to look at it before then. Thing is if I phone the emergency recovery as suggested by my original dealer they will recover presuambly to one of these dealers who are too busy to do anything. So do I have to do without my car for 10 days while it is waiting for what might be a 10 minute repair to tighten up something loose. VW customer service is not impressing me much at the moment. davyk31
It was a fairly large stone lodged in the wishbone apparently. It was sorted today, not a warranty issue but I was not charged. This was not with the crappy dealer who I bought the car from but another closer dealer......guess who I will be more inclined to use in the future, especially for my next car purchase!
