Carn
Hi there guys. Went away for the weekend in the GTI, she is only 2 weeks old. Needless to say a truck shot up a stone and left me with a stone chip about 3mm in diameter, right down to the bare metal. I need some advice on how best to repair it. I have been to a few specialist automotive repair centres, all of them pretty much said respray the entire fender Surely there must be another way to fix it without having to resort to repainting the entire fender. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Cheers
winrya
I've always found a touch up kit from vw will do a very good job of hiding stone chips. If it is really bad then try someone like chipsaway. Although it might cost you £60 to remove, its unnoticable once done, and involves no respray, they just repair the chip http://www.chipsaway.co.uk
nbetts
I received the 'mother of all stonechips' the other day about the same size as a 5p piece... Anyway - I phoned chips Away and they came out. To be fair the guy did say that he was not confident that he could do a good job and that spraying bonnets was something that chips away DONT like to do... Anyway, he went about the repair, rubbing down the chip to bare metal and then spraying with new paint, timed Infra Red Heat, more paint, more heat etc... Then an application of Lacquer... Result = Disaster. I now need the whole bonnet resprayed and it goes in Wednesday. To be fair, this is not a dig at Chips Away or the service that they offer - but on this occasion, regardless of hard the chap tried, a poor result was achieved. Cost of poor repair = £88 Cost of Repair to the poor repair = £200 Still - a lesson has been learnt. No more Chips Away for me.
