Matblack
Hi Guys I'm a noob thinking about buying my first S3 (currently driving a Clio 172) Right now I could afford to buy a second hand S3 225 with maybe 30k on the clock and 3-4 years old, these seem to be around £16-17k? However I am loath to part with £16k if come Autumn? when the new model is released we see a lot of 2nd hand S3s come on the market and the prices take a dip. Based on your previous experiences of Audi do you think this is likely and or will be significant? I'll probably go through a stealer for the new car, I know its more expensive but I hate selling privately and will need to lose the 172. Cheers MB
Simonl
I'd wait 6 months mate. or get a 197, cracking car!
Matblack
Depreciation on the 197 will be massive as I would have to buy new, I'm also liking the idea of something with a bit bit more class. I also have to drive down to Wales from Kent a few times a year and the Clio is very noisey and not particularly comfortable. The other kicker is to get the Clio up to 260bhp and 0-60 in under 6.5 is a big investment MB
Gren
Not sure current S3 prices will fall that much - many people who wanted a new one will have moved on by now anyway (R32, a new A3 or something altogether different). S3 has been out of production for some time, things only really hit when its a straight swap over like the TT (boohoo!)
Lovegroover
I completely agree with Gren. The fact that the new model comes out makes no difference to me atall, as i'm not in the market for a brand new car (so mine won't leap onto the market). If there is only a couple of years between models then the majority of owners of the previous model are likely to trade-in (cos they've got the £'s), in turn dropping the prices due to the influx of used models available. Used car prices are obviously driven by supply and demand, neither of which i believe will be adjusted by the introduction of the new S3. vanillaice
I'm in the same boat as you Matblack, but not on quite the same budget (mine being lower). It is something that has concerned me too, but I'm hoping Gren and others are correct. I'm hoping that the type of people who will be looking at the new S3 will have gone via Golf Mk5 GTi's / R32s, so hopefully the market wont suddenly be flooded by Mk1 S3's. I think I will sit tight until the new S3 is released, it wont change my mind, I still want a Mk1 S3, on the plus side there "may" be more choice. Who knows. bantam
It might depend on how much of an improvement the new S3 is over the old (or not as the case may be).
Phil84afc
Also bear in mind that many think the new shape S3 is not as nice as the old shape, so it'd be surprising if prices fell that much. The current looks are timeless.
geo_nr1
[ QUOTE ] Not sure current S3 prices will fall that much - many people who wanted a new one will have moved on by now anyway (R32, a new A3 or something altogether different). [/ QUOTE ] I would disagree, the R32 probbly dropped about 3k when the new ones came out.
Lovegroover
[ QUOTE ] I would disagree, the R32 probbly dropped about 3k when the new ones came out. [/ QUOTE ] For precisely the reason we're saying we don't think the S3 will. The new R32 was released just as people have started getting a few miles on their old ones, so they trade-in as they are the sort of people who can afford to buy new cars (otherwise most wouldn't have an R32). Most S3's are now on 2nd or 3rd owners at least i would've thought - not people who can afford a brand new one (in my case anyway).
Gren
Exaclty. The newest S3s are around 4 years old. The owners of these are not generally people who would dump them and rush out to buy the new ones. Also there have been A3s out for some time with similar performance. 3.2 is possibly faster and my wife's 2.0T is a match for my TT (S3 in drag!) much of the time. I know it's not quite the same and these may not have the same kudos but people who wanted a 'new S3' cos the old one was the last model will probably have changed cars already. geo_nr1
It doesn't matter how old they are...generally when a new model of any car comes out, the previous model takes a dip no matter what age the car is. It only really doesn't affect them much once a car's value is about 1/3 of the original RRP.
sitas3
For Sure, the current S3 will take a dip when trading in an S3 when the new model S3 is out! also take into account now that the s3 has lots of competition. When I was selling mine, all dealers I approached stated that the current S3 prices are being hammered by the newer A3 3.2 quattro, which perceivebly is a better car with more HP. Do I trust Dealers, no I don't!
chippiemick
I don’t think the s3 will suffer much when the new one comes out, ive had mine from new (jan o3) and the thought of a new one is very appealing, but I would be looking to find 12 to 15k plus mine as a px , if the new s3 had come out sooner then the depreciation would not have been so great with more chance of buying a new one, I think the price difference will be so great that not that many current s3 owners will be trading up
