encee
[ QUOTE ] Al I found the right car black body on basalt black 18 inch S wheels, Sound plus system, rear aprking sensors, heated seats, extra alarm system and auto climate control. 300 miles ex demo registered June 06 with Nottingham Porcshe, cost £36k gave me £16,500 for my car and the payments are £208 a month, pick her up Friday, ace. Cant wait I love these cars. Al They are easy to drive dont let my silly and poor driving put you off. I tried another car with 9,000 miles same price with 19 inch Chrono sports on them, but I found the ride a bit hard, supposed to be better with the higher grade suspension option. Dave Thanks for offering me your car, its really lovely I am sure you will have no trouble getting rid of it. I love the black though, mare to keep clean though. [/ QUOTE ] Gabster; that is one fantastic looking motor. Good luck for Friday, and enjoy; you lucky man !
Gabster
Thanks for your good vibes guys, roll on Friday. Al. Get the Porsche the new S3 wont be more fun to drive than the Boxster S. The Boxster is a 160 MPH top speed motor 0-60 in under six seconds you will never get it to a situation on UK roads were you are really pushing it you wont have more fun than the Boxster. Rachel
Well, being a "hair stylist" I'm not sure what I can add... Being lucky enough to drive an R32 as my daily driver and a 987 Boxster as the "weekend" car - AND having just come through a cold and sometimes very wet/sleety part of winter, I can say you should have no issues at all with either car. I have only been able to trigger PSM once, turning right up a hill from a red light in the rain. Other than that, I've driven the 987 mostly with the roof down, and haven't had any issues with its being RWD. Just drive it like Jackie Stewart told Captain Slow, and your grin will last for days. If you can afford a Boxster (in terms of not only $, but heartache w.r.t. the f*wits who might want to vandalise it) you'll never regret it. AL B
Thanks Rachel. All input is appreciated. You are very lucky indeed having an R32 and Boxster S - talk about musical engine notes!! Vandals - would be just my luck. All, What is the width and length of the car? Mirror-tip to Mirror-tip, widest part of the body-work and the length of the car. Need to check if it will fit in my garage too! Thanks AL
Gabster
Its around 1780mm wide the new Porsche is 1810mm ish I had the same problem I have gates I go through to the rear of my house, its tight. Do it you wont regret it.

AL B
Another question for you all, having read the tyre thread on this Boxster section. I have heard about the Porsche compound tyres, N1, N2 etc. and that Porsche develop the tyres as a critical component of the cars overall handling. Does this mean I can't buy Goodyear F1 GSD3s for a Boxster? I highly rate these tyres on the S3, wet or dry, and would like a decent wet weather tyre for a Boxster (if I buy one). Whats your thoughts? Thanks as always, AL
DHA
Yeah only use N rated tyres, the sidewalls are setup to allow for the way the cars handle. The Michelins are different to the ones you would have had on the S3 and are highly rated. That or Yoko AVS Sports, if you can get them, as they were great on my first Boxster. AL B
Cheers Dave. Someone else I know who has a Boxster S (986) tells me though that the N rated tyres seem only good in summer and crap in winter/wet weather. Whats your view on this? AL
DHA
Depends on the brand. Continentals are not great, which is what I have, but the Michelins need heat in them then they are very good.

AL [/ QUOTE ] I've had no problems in the sleet or wet (or cold) - and I've only had mine since the start of winter (down here). I'm looking at maybe replacing the tyres with Yokohama AVS V103s - as apparently it is difficult to get replacement Michelins in a timely fashion down here... Gabster
Never had any winter problems even in snow its pretty stable, its ace though doing handbrake turns on a nice sandy beach or in an empty car park in the snow. Handles fine, do you think they let hair dressers in cars that dont grip the road, imagine all the hair gel spills in the cock-pit.

[/ QUOTE ] hahaha, I wondered how long it would take for "hair dressers" to be mentioned!! Two of my friends have called me gay already because I'm even thinking about getting one! I can understand where people are coming from when they call them "hair dressers" cars though...as mostly I have only ever seen women driving them. Now these ladies are either extremely savvy, in that they know they are driving something quite potent and musical in the engine department. OR..they are just plain ignorant, and are wasting what is renowned to be one of the finnest sports cars around. But you do have a point Gabster, it can't be that bad can it, if "hair dressers" drive 'em. Hey, can one of you measure the distance between the wing mirrors, tip to tip? I know 986 is 1780mm, but that is apparently the width over the rear wheel arches. Its looking a bit of a squeeze getting one of these in my garage. Also, whats your advice on trackers? My insurance quote (Direct Line) requires a tracker fitted. (Strangely they didn't request this on the S4 v8) So are they worth the money? Heard RAC track star is pretty good. DHA
Would you want it back after it had been stolen? I have one as insurance requested it but would rather it didn't work to be honest.

I do actually have some leaflets/flyers for the greyhound racing - never been, believe it or not, but its supposed to be a good night out. Do they do a dog-guard for the Boxster...need to fit the whippet in. AL

Chrisg
Hi Al, how are you? I drove a Boxster S before I bought the S3. I enjoyed the S3 but...... I'm still not sure ! I think I may have enjoyed the Boxster more. Maybe the Porsche is something you have to get out of your system? It was so different to drive. Dave has given me a ride in his and again so different to the Audis. As for winter driving why not get a set of winter wheels with proper winter tyres, much better grip. Must be worth it if it is a 12 months a year driver. I'm still not sure - bit scared to make the jump I suppose. My accountant is also packing up work next year - for good - a few years early and that will make a hole in our disposable income until her pension kicks in !! But there will be a lump sum..... AL B
Hi Chris, Wow! How are you! Its been a very long time. Glad to see you are still around, and thanks for your input. Winter wheels could be an option, if I have any money left after the purchase - which is doubtful, the money that is. Like you, I'm still not sure, do I want to make the jump? Gabster is all for it! There is one thing that I sure of, the new S3 is doing nothing for me. Not like ours. My S3 was THE car I wanted. But the new one is just not having the same effect. My dilemma is, I want to get rid of mine (due to its long standing hesitation problem, and now juttery running on when cold/first start-up), but I just don't know what I want. Going back to the Boxster. What are peoples thoughts on the performance, compared to a standard 225 S3, and say a chipped S3? What are the Boxsters strengths? Cheers AL
Chrisg
It's several years now since my last drive, I remember the smoothness of the engine ( 6 cylinders always smoother), tractable, fairly quiet cruising and feel/handling like you just wouldn't believe. Part of the route was on a small country road and it felt so lively/easy to place/responded to even slight steering input. Dave's car went well, felt much quicker than my S3, firm ride, possibly similar to the GmbH on my S3. He would be the best to comment as he went from S3 to Boxster. They feel really solidly built, more so than Audi.

bazza_g
[ QUOTE ] Bazza, I though mine was getting caned at 14k in the first year, but 18k in a Boxster is some going. It's rapidly approaching service time - "it may be worth replacing all your discs and pads, not because they are worn. It's just what we say that to all OPC clients" [/ QUOTE ] Yup, just past 19k now - time to book its first service - its just had new tyres so hopefully it doesn't need much else doing apart from the oil change ....famous last words
redbeard
Hi Al, Just regarding your comment on 4wd in winter. Last winter I was confident my Audi would be great. It's a 3.0 diesel S-Line Quattro. Unfortunately with the combination of potholes and packed ice where I live I have to say it was a nightmare. Perhaps this was down to the 19 inch wheels, I don't know. Anyway, this year I've still got my Audi, but now I have the Boxster S too. If I'm brave enough to take the little lady out in snow I guess I'll have an opportunity to compare. Hope you enjoy your Boxster. I come home with a grin that has to be surgically removed every time I drive it.
