[Audi A3/S3] A3 2.0TDI Sport - Missing a beat at idle - Help!!

Hi guys,

I'm at a bit of a loose end as to whats wrong with my 2003 (new shape) A3, and the dealer cant find the fault either.

At idle, the car sometimes not always misses a beat and jerks the engine forward, then puts itself right, misses a beat and so on and so on - it seems to do it more when its warming up.

The car has recently (for an oil leak) had the cylinder head and gasket, and throttle body replaced by the audi centre and i had the timing belt changed at the same time, but the fault occured before that was changed.

Guided diagnostics always come back as "no fault found"

Tonight however, when i stopped the car and took the key out, the engine lamp, handbrake lamp and battery lamp remained illuminated for approx 15-20 seconds then went out, however they operate as normal the next time i turn the key.

Alternator appears to be fine, battery is 12.4v when engine is off and 14.6v when engine is on.

Has anyone experienced this problem or have any ideas as to what it might be, all help appreciated

PS. i'm told that the ecu is at the latest version

Thanks!

Mine's back in the dealer for 2 days on monday to try find the faults! - no doubt they'll use the no fault found terminology again!

My way of thinking is that if guided diagnostics cant find a malfunction with any of the monitored components maybe the component thats failed isnt monitored, ie Engine Control Unit or Body Control System modules.

How old is your daughters car, and how many miles has it covered??? - do the revs still fluctuate if you turn the climate control off?

Would be interested to see if they can actually fix the problem this time round.. i'm not holding out much hope, maybe its time it visited a diesel specialist??

Mine does the same when cold. Revs go between 800 - 900. I have a DSG and it sometimes actually stalls if you try and pull away as the revs sink. Mine is an 04 with 36K and has been doing it for the last 6 months.

Due for a service soon so was going to ask them to look at it then. If you find out whats causing the problem - please let me know.

Dave

sounds familiar!, did it again on the way home tonight.... loss of power, tickover missing a beat and jerking through the car and engine/battery/handbrake lights illuminated.

Have called Audi Assistance out to it and the dedicated Audi Technician is coming out to see it at 9am tomorrow, lets hope its either logged a fault code this time or he knows what it is....

Update

Audi Roadside Assistance have just been out to see the car, predictably it wouldnt recreate the fault, but was linked upto Audi Diagnostics which reported a fault code for the Radiator Coolant Fans sporadically not being able to turn.

Further diagnosis found that the reading from one of the injectors was alot different from the others...maybe this is whats causing the suspected misfire? (was a diference of + 0.8)

Still going into the garage on Monday....lets see if the technicians visit helps them to diagnose the fault and replace parts smile.gif

i've had this problem with my 54 plate a3 tdi sline since i bought it 4 months ago. i keep getting told that there isn't a fault. its just come back to me for a third time with no fault found but its due back in on sept 1st. audi are really not helping, the technician came out with me the other day and it did it with him. my biggest problem is when it misses, they'd better find something in two weeks.

Yeah, mine appears to lose power, misses a beat then occasionally cuts out (its mostly done it on the motorway ... it's scary, you think will it, wont it restart???)

Called the Audi Dedicated Technician out via Roadside Assistance on Thursday, he found an abnormality in the readings from the injectors (injector 4 was alot higher than 1,2 and 3) and I suspect because it hasnt actually failed it wont log a fault code because its running within boundaries for fault diagnosis, but outside the range for of the other injectors! - it did have a fault code for cooling fan failure that I didnt know about :o

I've just logged this problem with Audi UK Customer Services because the centre seemed to take the stance, well if guided diagnostics dont pick up the error then theres nothing wrong and we HAVE to see the car when the faults happening to to able to fix it, which is trash cos the ADT saw the abnormalities and the Audi Centre should use his readings to fix the car. Anyway Audi UK are going to contact my service advisor at the Audi Centre to find a resolution to this problem.

This has been going on since February this year (8000 miles!!!!) and the car is now dangerously close to its 60,000 boundary for the manufacturers warranty (58k) - although this is covered by a top-up warranty to allow warranty coverage over 60k / 3yrs, I think I'll be extending the warranty for another year, at £874 it is expensive but I suppose you do get Audi Roadside Assistance as well which would be £200 alone from the RAC for that package..... Plus the parts department informed me that a fuel injector for a 2.0TDI is a whacking £450 for just the parts and fitting / calibration is on top!!! In my view the warranty is worth it!!!

Nice car tho, I would have another, theres just something bout driving an Audi that feels just so much better than any other car! .. and after all is isnt the cars fault, rather that the technicians cant find the fault (or arent looking for it!!)

Will keep you updated!

SLine_Oli - does your car do exactly the same in terms of losing power, cutting out etc? how many miles u got on your car???

Latest Update.

Turned the car off yesterday and the Engine / Handbrake / Battery light stayed on, while i was calling for Audi Assistance they changed to Airbag / Handbrake / ABS and Power Steeting lights and remained on.

The RAC came out and diagnosed the dash pod not shutting down properly and referred me back to the dealer as they dont carry the diagnostics to fix it and an audi technician wasnt available.

I mentioned the problem i was having with a bit clutch judder, loss of power and misfire and he told me that if its got a dual-mass flywheel (springs in the flywheel instead of clutch plate) and if the crankshaft sensor is on the flywheel and not the shaft, the flywheel can vibrate and warp slightly enough so under load it produces a shudder on the clutch, jerks thru the car and can cause a misfire as the crank sensor cant log the engine speed properly so the ecu doesnt know what to do and misses a beat.

Either way the injector is still way out, the cooling fan is still off and the dash pod puts random lights on to say hello! but the flywheel may be my misfire! ... its going into the audi centre tomorrow so i'll see what they say!

more updates to follow ......

update...

just had a call to say the cars thrown errors on diagnostics for the dash pod, a vacuum pipe, cooling fans and the engine wiring loom.

parts are on order and i get the car back hopefully next wednesday!

WRT the clutch judder, gotta wait and see if these repairs cure it, if it doesnt its going back in to have the flywheel / clutch checked!

will let you know if this cures the problem!

well cars been in the dealers for best part of two weeks now, hopefully its coming back today (yippee!!!) but i've yet to see if the misfire / judder is cured tho.

I'm thinking of having Cruise Control Retrofitted to the car too when its all fixed, i've been quoted £230 by theu audi dealer for parts, fitting and configuration - doesnt sound bad does it?

Will post more info on misfire and judder as soon as i've had a chance to drive my baby again!

In case it helps, i'm having the same problem. Car shuddering and losing power. Happened on a drive down to Italy couple of weeks ago, then fine until Saturday.

Called out an Audi roadside technician, who plugged in his computer and diagnosed it as an injector failure. Said it was not driveable, so we moved it to a local Audi stealer and the technician left the diagnostic report in the car.

This is the beautiful part: when the stealer service dept drove the car into the workshop, they experienced the problem. However, by the time the car was loaded onto the diagnostic equipment, the car went back to normal.

Dealer has refused to keep the car for further testing and wants me to pick it up, without carrying out any work, even though they know there is a problem.

Any thoughts welcome...
