[Audi A3/S3] Bluetooth Phone Prep

Hi all,

I regularly read these forums and find them very informative, though this is my first post. I’ve noticed this issue for a while but it isn’t a big priority, but I thought I would put it out there to see if anyone else has seen this. I have the Audi Bluetooth phone prep, with the ugly useless dash mounted cradle holder ROLLEY~14.GIF. I was never provided with a user manual for this feature (if there even is one). What I have noticed is that sometimes when an incoming call is being received the caller ID is displayed on the dashboard. However, this is rarely the case. Most of the time it is the caller number only being displayed. I thought this was something to do with your contacts being stored on SIM or on phone memory. But I can’t reproduce the caller ID display either way. It seems to be random!

Does anyone know the ins and outs of the phone prep?

Thanks for your time on this.

Con

I use the phone memory for contacts and this has always displayed the name on the dash with both my V600 and K800i. You do need to wait for the bluetooth to sync the contacts(takes about 3-5 mins) though for the name to appear or you just get the number up.

One weird thing I have found with my K800i though is if I have a wap push message in the sms inbox(i.e. your network letting you know you have a missed call, or a computer sent sms) the phone wont stay connected and will randomly disconnect and reconnect every few minutes as the bluetooth cant sync/deal with it. Also if my recent call lists have any phone number or contact in there starting with "+44" then the same thing happens. Its a bit of a pain as I have to delete all my call lists before driving and make sure there are no wap push messages.

Welcome to the forums BTW smile.gif

ooops. I suppose I should have put it on the other forum. I was just used to reading the A3 forum all the time.

Nice one… I’ll go back and check the whole location of contacts on the phone route. Wow and a bonus answer as well!! I was having that issue as well of random disconnections and reconnections, but just thought it was some Bluetooth firmware problem with my S700i.

Thanks very much for your help and for the welcome!

The bluetooth link is really different for different types of phone. From what i understand, there are actully different types of Bluetooth software developed by different phone makers. Audi have tried to make it work with most of the common makers of phone. But i do know that depending on the handset there are completely different results on connection. Your dealer should have a list of what phones work best and what functions are likely to work or not.

We have the exact same thing with out K700i, connects then drops constantly. K750i works fine though, guess software on the phone is the problem.

Basically Audi provide the hands free profile in their bluetooth kit and additionally as set of GSM commands to read the phone book, calls, operator logo and signal strength. Not all phones support these GSM commands and so will not give you the additional functions on top of the hands free profile.

As to phones having issues connecting, usually it is down to firmware revisions. I would always recommend getting your phone updated to the latest firmware to resolve connections issues. I had issues with the K750i until I fot to revision RA1008 or similar.

With the phones constantly dropping connections, well with SE phones, contacts stored in "Other" groups can cause issues with constant dropping. Several people have had this issue with K800i's.

Here is a list of supported BT phones

This list of phones has been tested in the UK & US with an EU or US RNS-E . Your results may vary due to firmware issues with the phones etc.

You'll recall fitting my S4 with bluetooth a few months ago, absolutely brilliant system (and job!).

I can personally add HP Ipaq phones to the ones that don't work - from searching the web the new windowsmobile 5 ones don't work either.

I got a 6230i, and it worked fine. Sadly on Friday night I discovered that Nokia 6230i phones die instantly when dropped into large glasses of 15 year old malt whisky. Whisky was still drinkable thank God!

Anyway I'm due an upgrade from vodafone, so been to carphone warehouse in Stockport trying phones. A couple of nice young blonde ladies brought the phones out to my car, and we tried them out: Nokia 6234 wouldn't upload the phone book, neither would N73. Got fed up trying after that. Do you know if there was a specific software version on the 6234 that worked? Anyone tried N or E series phones?

Had a nice trip to France in the summer with the satnav finding its way around, had an incident where it lost itself for no apparent reason - presumably because it's a copy disc. I'll buy the TMC equipped disk when they release it, but do you think it's likely to have bluetooth module updates in the firmware on the new disk??? That might make phone choice a bit simpler.

Regards

Jim

I doubt that any firmware updates will be available for modules as there is no mechanism for reprogramming the modules in teh car like there is in the A8/A6/Q7 modules.

Basically any symbian OS phone will not work. And if you have a windows mobile 5 phone, the you can use the jetware product to enable functionality for around a tenner.

I can't comment on individual firmware of phones as this list has been compiled by lots of people and not by myself, I only have tried about 10% of the phones.

I have a K800i, and mine drops sometimes and not others. Will have a look in my recent calls and see if i can spot business contacts or +44 numbers and see if it helps.

In kind of a related note, any idea when they might release some more cradles to fit the ugly dash mounted hump? confused.gif

The Audi website doesn't seem to tell me, and if i phoned the dealership i would only end up test driving and buying something i couldn't afford! smirk.gif

Thanks

Did your 6230i sync the contacts over to the RNS-E? Does Anyone know if the 6230i supports this with RNS-E?

I've got an 05 s4 cab with the BT prep & cradle and I can't get the RNS-E unit to retreive any contacts from the phone. I have copied all of my contacts to the sim and phone memory, in the hope that it was the memory in the phone I was using. Didn't work either!

Great guess work involved eh? A bit of documentation from Audi wouldn't go a miss or a engagable sync funcion smile.gif

My K800i did the same thing with dropping calls. I have to clear the recent call list to keep mine paired. I'm not sure what numbers cause it but sometimes its ok and other times it isnt, all my numbers are +44 ones but I have them listed under different profiles(i.e. work, mobile and home) and one of those settings seem to be what buggers it.

I have a 6230i and it works flawlessly with the GSM prep and RNS-E in my A3. Full phonebook and call list syncing over both bluetooth and cradle connections.

Only issue I've had is that once in a while the phone starts randomly connecting and disconnecting but a simple switch off/on of the handset cures this so it's obviously just the phone having a bit of a brain-fart.

I've learned from another thread that my RNS-E is way out of date in terms of it's firmware. The TMC update (and new navigation DVD) will bring mine up from 0100 which it is now to 0550 (I think it was). Hopefully, that will end the phone sync issue.

I've had an N80 - you're quite right - it was a nightmare, it built up very large data bills (into the hundreds) all on it's little own (which Orange refunded) - flogged it on Ebay, went back to my K750i which wasn't 100% on the Audi so I got the 6310i & cradle (coudn't get a K750i cradle).
