yes SA - Milltek cat-back with APS stage 1 remap. I originally did the Milltek Manifolds/Cats as a fix to the boominess at 2-2.5k revs. To be fair to Milltek the boominess vanished but unfortunately the driveability suffered so this setup could not continue.

An interesting development this afternoon. Given that I cannot reduct the boominess by using extra Milltek parts without losing performance, I have used some initiative and in true TSN style may have found a fix.

See the attached pic. For 25 quid I have obtained a four foot square section of Dynamat (as per the stereo install).

By using the highly scientific method of "tapping" the spare wheel well and fixing small sections of the dynamat onto the areas that vibrate the most, the metal boot floor no longer resonates when "tapped".

So I went for a fairly *cough* hot drive, then tried 6th gear at 60mph (exactly the right conditions for the boominess problem) and lo and behold the booming has all but gone. The exhaust still sounds gruff and bassy in these conditions but the deafening boomy sound just doesn't seem to be as bad.

It may take a little more dynamat to completely solve the problem, but have only used around half of the 25 quid roll so plenty more left.

Hi Robin - it's efffectively sticky-back plastic with an aluminium coating and a rubber compound that provides the sound-deadening properties.

it's what gives my sound system the "thump" without distortion - a must for any serious install.

your post encouraged me to explain more Robin ....

In the first pic you can see the MkV R32 boot layout as a cross-section - note the wobbly red line which is the sound vibration from the rear silencer.

In the second pic the dyanamt (in smaller sections as per the previous pic) is stopping the boot floor acting like a speaker - the metal floor has to reproduce the sound of the exhaust but cannot do so properly because it's a lump of metal.

All the "space age" stuff does is make the sound between exhaust, heat shield, air gap and boot floor (all of which could change and/or amplify the exhaust note when hot) penetrate the cabin less.

Put simply it has stopped the boot floor acting like a speaker. Less "speakers" in the cabin means more natural sound - whether from your car audio or other factors e.g. the engine/exhaust.

Conversely the exhaust rasping sound (from the downpipes between manifold & cats) has now increased because I am not hearing as much of the impromptu boot "speaker".

Not at all - with the rest of the car sound-deadened, the engine is the only sound you get even with plenty of other traffic flowing by. The Milltek cat-back sound is like the OEM version but louder.

There's also the bonus of the performance matching the sound - 4th/5th gear are rapid when pushed FIREdevil.gif

Isn't there a known issue with fitting the Milltek cats to the R32?

RS32's previous posts have highlighted on problems encountered when having these fitted. He noted a loss it torque and power once the cats were installed and has since taken them off.

I'm not sure if you have a MKIV or MKV R32, but I think this only applies to the MKV.

the confusion here is down to my post title I fear - I cannot comment directly on the MkIV having never owned one but there are many members on here with the cats on their MkIV's, I believe with no reported problems.

MkIV owners - the loss of torque and introduction of a flat spot relates to a MkV R32 with the Milltek sports cats / manifolds. I have not been testing any new products for the MkIV.

You'll gain about 8 bhp and 6 lb/ft of torque adding the Milltek hi-flow sports cats to a Mk4 R32 which has been remapped. AmD Stage 2 remap plus cat-back Milltek 270 bhp. Add the sports-cats 278 bhp. Two separate cars, same upgrade. Neither of them are that spec any more though... ROLLEY~14.GIF

I don't get any flat-spots and know that Helfinger (who used to run the ST4 conversion before he went supercharged) didn't either.

Well I had the cats fitted on Friday along with a few other goodies at Awesome-GTI. So far I am very very impressed. Combined with my straight through CAT back the sound is amzing. Less boomy on the motorway but when you step on the pedal a lot more growl. The car seems to be more responsive as well. I just love my car.

The cats that were taken off the car were in tact unlike Dan32's

I will run the car like this for a week or two and then I am going to get the REVO stage 2 remap.

I must say that this is the second time that I have used Awesome and their service is fantastic.
