Ranter
Hi folks, has anyone here with an A3 fitted a dvd sat nav? I've been lent an A6 S-Line by my dealer, and the dvd sat nav in it is fantastic. The map data here in Northern Ireland is superb compared with any other nav device that I've used. I'd like to fit something similar into my 2004 A3, anyone have any suggestions? I've seen the Pioneer AVIC-X1BT and it looks fairly good. Anyone know what map data it uses? Thanks

When it's installed (using the RNS-E adapter to connect with the existing radio plugs) does it behave exactly as an OEM RNS-E would, including displaying the correct messages on the DIS? cnamlla
if you have the double din cage in, it easy just a matter of taking the radio out and plugging the sat nav in. I was lucky it came up on my DIS straight away, but you may need some coding with VAG to get it to work. I got the unit of ebay and the adapters from Kufatec. theres plenty of if info on the forums on how to install just have a quick search. I would def recommend doing its well worth it. [/ QUOTE ] Thanks for that cnamlla. What did you do about your GPS antenna? Did you site it under the dash, or did you connect up the "shark fin"? If under the dash, what is the GPS reception like compared to OEM?
cnamlla
decide to go under the dash, did'nt fancy drilling a hole in the roof reception is good you have to play around abit getting in the right place. a found it best to take the glove box out and it fits just behind the fan unit, with a bit fiddling you can get next to the top of the dash. I get between 6-8 sats at any one time and have had no probs at all with reception. good look with the install
shark_90
GPS under the dash is sufficient unless it's an A8. The "shark fins" are nothing but style accessories. If that style is your thing.
Ranter
I've the single din, basic radio. Is it a big job changing to double din?
cnamlla
um in a word yes! you have to take the single din cage out and replace it with a double din one. that involves taking the glove box, under steering wheel cover, grap handles, centre console out, and that just the start! it can be done but takes a fair amount of time and patience. it took me about 7 hours to complete start to finish but well worth it
Ranter
wow! That's above my level of expertese. I read a partial "how to" and it said you also had to cut down the climate control section a bit. is this the case? What sort of money am I looking at for Audi to do it for me? thanks
shark_90
Audi won't do it for you I'm afraid. Give CraigyB a shout
gizze
If you take the instrument cluster out and wedge the gps antenna above the cluster in the little pocket at the top of the dome you will get full signal.
cnamlla
yeah do have to cut the climate control unit down a bit, Audi won't do it for you as it is a factory fit option only. It will cost you about £800 to do it yourself. All it takes is a bit of time and patience and the ability to follow instructions
