petewxm Posted October 16, 2006 Report Share Posted October 16, 2006 Hi I recently had an oil change in my Bora 1.9tdi pd130 and have noticed that the garage that changed the oil have over filled it by about 1/4 of a litre. Will this damage my CAT or engine. Or am I worring for nothing, cause its just a small amount. Or should I drain the additional amount out? Dave Posted October 16, 2006 Report Share Posted October 16, 2006 It could damage your cats if you start burning off excess. How do you know they've overfilled it?.. make sure you take your oil dip stick reading when the car is on a level surface and the engine is warm but not hot. Leave it about 20 minutes after turning off. Wipe stick and then re-insert and see what the level is. If it's a big overfill then i would drain some off. I will check again later with the enigine warm and on a flat surface. The thing that made me check is that I bought the oil myself and asked a garge to use it, It was a 5 litre tub, it came back with about 250mls, and I read somewhere that the bora holds about 4.5 litres. jeepman Posted October 18, 2006 Report Share Posted October 18, 2006 The same thing happened when mine was service by VW had to go back to have some drained as was buring oil and if left would have destroyed Cat. as well as looking naff! I have bought Petrol engines that have been over filled, they burn oil but only after the valve stem seals have been damaged. Once the seals are replaced they stopped burning oil!! Rustynuts Posted October 18, 2006 Report Share Posted October 18, 2006 Too much oil will possibly get forced out through the crank case vent as oil vapour when it gets warm.
