you wouldn't by chance be using a dell laptop?

some older chipsets are only able to deal with sd cards up to 1GB...

a lot of cards will refuse to work until they have first been formatted by Winblows... and I/O error could be to do with the USB/firewire conflicts

I doubt an external reader would make any different apart from transfer speed

Try it again with everything else unplugged to reduce the chance of a conflict and see what happens.

Also another daft question are there any carpet hairs on the contacts or finger marks? Might be work making sure they are clean on the reader and the card

JD,

Go into Event Viewer (Start --> Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Event Viewer), Select the "system" log. you should see a bunch or red errors. Double click on one and post the error message here 169144-ok.gif

However, there was a warning in the last few minutes...

The semaphore timeout period has expired. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

Thanks for that........I may get a standalone card reader just to cover all angles. 169144-ok.gifbeerchug.gif

Here's a funny thing. I have just inserted the sd card in my PC and the format removable disc dialogue window has opened. The capacity is showing as 3.78GB, FAT32 (non negotiable), Allocation unit size - default (non negotiable too)and the only format option not being greyed out is "quick format"....pressed start, countdown bar went across as if it was formatting!!! Then window opened to say windows was unable to complete the format!! Feck off!!! confused.gif

hmm, you shouldn't really have to format a new sd card!

I suggest you try the card on another card reader to see if the card is ok.

seeing that the card's capacity is incorrectly reported leads me to believe that your card reader can't handle the SD's 2GB capacity.
