Help - Multitronic Problem

Hi Lads,

This is my first post so go easy on me wink.gif

I have a question that I hope you guys can help me with!

Recently I have begun notice a judder or shake from the car (2004 A4) as I accelerate from a standstill. It's difficult to describe but as i put the foot down and the car goes up through the "gears" the car judders. I have also noticed that at certain speeds eg 50mph the rpms fluctuate by about 250-500 rpm resulting a noticeable "pull".

There's about 55K miles on the clock.

I hope I've described the problem clearly enough.

Can anyone shed some light on what the problem might be (please don't' say the box is fecked)

that's kinda what i was thinking :/

am gonna try get it into the stealer for a once over (and to check if in still under warranty) need it for work though so i don't know when i'll have the time but i also dont want to make things worse either...

could it be the transmission fluid needs changing?

Welcome to TSN.

Multitronics can have clutch problems (they dont have a fluid torque converter like a conventional auto box). Your local friendly dealer will sort it out for you. 3 years from the date of first registration, and 60K miles is the limit for the warranty, as long as the car has been service in line with Audi guidelines.

Audi will also provide alternative transportation for you.

thanks for the welcome.

that put's my mind at ease a bit! there's less than 60K miles aon the clock and all the necessary servicing has been done so i should definitely still be under warranty though i thaught it was two years? maybe it's different over here in ireland? (i wouldn't srprise me if it was!) anyway, i guess i'll find out soon enough!!!

Hi, I have a 2.0 FSI saloon (2003 vintage) with a multitronic gearbox. I had to have the gearbox ECU replaced earlier this year (at 54K miles). It failed quickly, only once before it failed did I notice the engine revving erratically so this may not be the same fault you have but it might be a contender. The ECU was replaced under warrenty but the dealer mentioned it was an £800 pound job.

I have subsequently done quite a bit of investigation into these gearboxes and one issue that keeps coming up is the changing of the transmission fluid. From what I can gather these boxes were origninally sold as 'sealed for life' i.e. they would never need the gearbox oil changing. However, it then seems that after a number of failures Audi issued a 'recommendation' that the fluid be changed every 40,000 miles. However, they did not state that this was manditory and it was at owner discretion as to whether it was done. It then seems that in some cases Audi refuses to accept responsibility for rectification of multitronic failures if this 40,000 service has not been done. However, there does also seem to be evidence though of Audi making a goodwill contribution in some cases. I should point out that this is just from evidence trawled from the internet

So, do you know if the transmission fluid was changed at 40,000 miles? If not, as soon as the gearbox is fixed, get it done.

I have seen posts from people who have done high mileages in multitonics (150K +) but all state the importance of getting the ATF changed every 40,000 miles.

I bought a used A4 Avant(MY2003) 3 months ago and it had a horrendous vibration at 4K revs turned out the dual mass flywheel was cattle trucked and was replaced under warranty all seems to be well now although fuel consumption is on the high side at 36mpg average 40 on a run.Best of luck with Audi. smile.gif

I have read that in some cases changing the ATF has been all that was needed to fix a variety of problems with multitronic gearbox so I think you are wise to start with this.

Unless you know of an independent Audi specialist and have confidence that they know what they are doing, this is one job I would recommend that you have an Audi dealer do. The ATF used has to be of a unique specification and from what I can gather there is no indicator to show when the gearbox has been filled with the correct amount. Instead, the engine is run until the gearbox oil has reached the correct temp and drained, then the same amount replaced. Cost me £150 which is reasonable for some piece of mind.
