Hudson
The 130bhp version has been dropped, but if i bought the 100bhp version would i be able to chip it and get the same performance ??? I think the other came with a 6 speed box though and the lower version is only 5 speed.
shao_khan
You would be able to get around the 130 mark with a chip - I think most of the tuners quote an increase of around +30bhp and +35torque.
TP27
MrsTP has the 100bhp Polo TDi Sport and yes, it has the 5-speed 'box. The 130bhp model was dropped when the GTi came on the scene. The 100bhp car is brilliant to drive, I'm well impressed with it. The only observation I'd make with the 130bhp model (which I test drove) is that there's a lot of wheel spin if you floor it - you may find you chew tyres with the extra oomphh !! Hudson
Cheers for that, i would have just like the 6th gear but hey, i will survive.
TP27
The gearing in the 100bhp TDi 5 speed 'box is good. You'll not notice the lack of a sixth gear IMO. The torque also allows plenty of pull in fifth gear too which makes it a relaxing tourer on longer journeys !
rozzerfodder
My previous car was a polo TDi 100, swapped for a slightly faster golf However, back on topic, I test drove a 130 Gt and noticed at 70 that in 6th it was only pulling 1-150 rpm less and seeing as though I regularly got 60MPG out of my 100, the RPM difference was negligible. The 130 GT was noticeably more pokey but if you had the 100 chipped it would be up to 130. The engine is fairly quiet when cruising but road and wind noise are a little intrusive, far more so than my golf. If you are not afraid of remapping then I would recommend the 100, I loved mine. Hudson
Excellent news, how did you find the ride in the 'sport' model, was it hard or is the sport name tag just for marketing purposes !!
rozzerfodder
Ride was not too firm, it may be classed as a supermini but its dimensions are the same as the original MK1 golf iirc. The downsides are poor quality plastics, interior noise (not engine) above 70MPH, creaky/rattly front console. Good points, torquey engine, mega fuel economy. If it were me in your shoes though I would probably look at going for a golf tdi 130Pd or a 150 if you can reach to one. Both are very responsive to remapping and not much less economical than the Polo but they are larger and better built. The polos are built in Spain whereas the golfs are built in Wolfsburg. Just my opinion mind If you have 20K + to spare, get a MKv gti, its the dogs danglies
Hudson
I have also been looking at the Seat Ibiza FR TDI 130, 6 speed, looks a great motor and based upon the Polo chassis with polo bits and bobs !!! about £1500 cheaper. I am going to have a drive of one tomorrow.
benjie
Why have they dropped the 130TDi? Are they worried it's out-pace the 150GTi? (I've heard it happening with 130TDi and 150GTi MkIV Golfs!) Also, there's an FR 130 and a Fabia 130 - so why get rid of the 'original' one? (if you catch my drift?) rozzerfodder
I am sure I heard sales were not strong enough and seeing as though VW cut their range this year, I believe less popular models got the chop. Cannot remember the price but I think list was something like 14500, for a supermini FFS.
benjie
I expect sales weren't good enough because of the lack of advertising. Oh well. It is a bit steep, though the 3door gti is about 15000 and I expect the 130tdi had all the stuff the gti has (minus the red grille and little labels like that).
