rpwaring
can anybody tell me whether it is worth getting a cold air intake? i have been looking at the carbonio air intake but cant make my mind up which one to get?
RedRobin
Mk4 or Mk5 .:R ?? Probably not worthwhile unless you also get a performance exhaust. I think someone whose name begins with 'M' makes good ones....Mill-something ?

rpwaring
its a mk4 with superchip, do they make much noise?
Dan32
At low throttle openings, they are quiet, with wide open throttle, the intake noise is louder. Certainly not unbearable. I've got the Miller Beer Can Exhaust (Milltek straight thru, with sports cats in reality!) and most of the noise is drowned out by that. Didn't notice huge increase in power but throttle response seemed little bit crisper. If its with any future planned mods, its worth it as it all adds up, but in isolation, not huge difference for the money. I've got the EIP one which is colour coded and came with a bypass valve to prevent hydro-locking the engine if I drove thru a deep puddle, but this takes long time to come from the US and is lot more expensive than, say, the Carbonio one. rpwaring
i used to have a subaru with a hks power flow filter and it sounded great and quite loud which i liked so this is why i ask, how deep of a puddle will cause this? Dan32
well, the filter sits just in front of nearside wheel well, behind the front grill, and is nearly as low as front spoiler, so if you were to submerge up to the lower grills, that could hydrolock engine. Deep, in other words!
rpwaring
oh right so its nothing to worry about really, i hope! i will prob get a miller at some point so will have to save the beer tokens
khutula
I have the same straight through beer can exhaust with sports cats that Dan has, but I have the Carbonio CAI, its £165 +VAT available from Awesome-GTI (my second home). The intake is worth it combined with the exhaust, it creates a better intake of cold air that can be more easily expelled by the sports exhaust. All three mods are well worth it, but I would do the exhaust first, then the CAI and then the sports cats. I believe that the beer can exhausts are going up in price in the new year due to the increase in cost of stainless steel. I wouldn't worry about the bypass valve FAQ here
wise_old_fart
I have always been told by tuning companies that air filters and cold air feeds can cause problems with the MAF. Why not go down the old school and put extra holes in the air box. MK2 style
