Changing a sidelight bulb on MkIV R32

The sidelight bulbs aren't halogen on the Mk4 Golf, so you don't need to worry about touching them.

Don't, just don't ask a main dealer to change the bulb - they quote and charge for removing the headlight, which involves removing the bumper. You can guess this isn't cheap!

If you want to do it yourself, you'll need a torx screwdriver, to loosen the two torx screws that secure the top of the headlight. This will let you tilt it forward to give you more room.

Remove the battery cover (there are two clips, one on each side). This gives you more room.

Unclip the cover from the back of the headlight unit and slide it towards the wing and down. Get hold of the wires that connect to the sidelight bulb (make sure you get the right ones!). Gently pull the wires - the bulb holder is very well secured to this, so don't worry about breaking it - just be gentle.

Replace the bulb and then get hold of the wire just behind the bulb holder. Push the bulb holder back into the back of the light unit (you have to do it by feel).

Put everything back how you found it. Then you're done.

This really is a 2 minute job - at least it is now that I've ended up replacing side-light bulbs for feck knows how many Mk4 R32 Tyresmokers!

If you aren't happy to do it yourself, print this page off and take it to your local VW specialist and ask them to do it for you.
