Tarmac_Terrorist
My Dad has just had his BMW 320 serviced this week (franchised dealer) and noticed a charge of £8 at the bottom of the bill upon returning home. I can't remember the exact word used unfortunately but it was basically suggesting it was a fee for disposal of the used engine oil. Surely this is just part of the garages overheads? Has anyone else experienced this? Will they start charging for electricity soon?
rs32
IIRC the recycling rules have been like this for a while - commercial disposal of chemicals is treated pretty strictly. Same with tyres, batteries and a whole bunch of other stuff.
RedRobin
....and not just car related products needing specific disposal.
Tarmac_Terrorist
BMW are taking a lid off a can of worms detailing this on the bill. Surely it would save a lot of hassle just to mark up the labour charge or even the new oil cost. I've not seen this before on any car service bills I've had. I'll look out for the same oil disposal charge next time I buy some fish & chips then.
RedRobin
I've had such charges on tyres. I think you'll find that the garage may be obliged to give a full breakdown of costs. He certainly is obliged to do so if you request it.

showtime
we used to list it seperately on the invoices where i work & loads of people grizzled about it! the prices were just increased across the board & that line of text deleted
Rustynuts
Ask the garage to return it to you and dispose of it yourself. The local tip has an oil recycling drum.

DanG
[ QUOTE ] who could be bothered to do that for the sake of a few quid [/ QUOTE ] Me. £8 is £8.... Besides you pay for this sort of disposal in your council tax, so why not get what you pay for and take it to the tip? I will watch this when I get the UK car serviced. For the record, BMW 'CORA' requirements say stuff about oil etc disposal, and have done for years. Dealerships have had to contract disposal firms to get rid of this stuff for a very long time..... why only now start passing an additional charge on to the customer? Rustynuts
Because you always paid for it before (included in the service price) and now instead of charging you more for a service and p!ss off the customer they can paint it with the "green" brush and charge you separately. Drop the price of the service and then charge for oil disposal, and I won't have a problem. I take none of the parts away from my customers when I fit new ones (save oil filters, but I leave the packaging) as they don't belong to me. If I was to suddenly start charging them to dispose of their old oil pump or burner nozzle, all of them would say "Leave 'em with me then, and I'll bin 'em!". [/ QUOTE ] But a garage is not allowed to take it to the tip. We charge £1.50 for a waste disposal charge at the garage I work for. The local VW dealer to us, charges for seat covers and floor mats, Now I think thats crazy!
