I did it, I drove the S3

Well I had a day off work yesterday and just happened to drive past the local Audi garage, so I decided to stop in.

They currently have a very nice Sprint Blue demo with the two tone leather in it and I must say that it looks very nice indeed.

First impressions were that the front looked great, but the rear a bit ordinary. However what I did like about it that the R doesn't have, is the S3 logo's on the calipers and on instrument panel. Why VW didn't do this with the MKV Golf I'll never know!

I found the seating position very nice also and the leather did feel of a better quality (softer). The seats were the standard one's and to be honest, they did the job perfectly.

I'll not write a full review as there have been many on here already, but I'll just give my impressions from a "tuned" MKV owners perspective.

The drive was excellent basically! The ride was firm but not too "crashy" and turn in was good also. I think part of this is due to the fact that the car is lighter than the R32 and doesn't have a whopping great engine up front.

Anyway, in a straight line it was fantastic! There is a very slight lag, and it is only very slight, then a very firm shove in the back! I did find that after about 5500rpm the power was starting to tail off a bit though.

Whereas my Golf pulls in a very linear fashion all the way through to it's new 7200rpm redline, the S3 did tail off. However the S3 definitely "shoves" you when that turbo kicks in and that brought a grin to my face every time!!

So the burning question is "would I swap my Golf for one?". Well for the moment I'd say no mainly because the R32 is really starting to loosen up now. It seems to be reving more freely, pulling more cleanly across the range and has great throttle response.

However having said that, when I come to change the car in 3 years time, I'm 95% certain my deposit will be going to Audi! With a remap it must be crazy and for that alone, I don't think I could resist!!

I had the previous S3 Chris, and they are GREAT cars, especially for cheap aftermarket tuning, but one thing.... 2.0Turbo... once you've had big Six's or even V8's, you'll miss the sound that these cars make oh so much... I've never looked back... The only logical next step has to be a V8 in my books, or a turbo'd 6... just my humble opinion...
