djjuk
Hi all, first post & need help! Just got my new GTI via motorpoint so is an import. Was only way I could get it in budget as it is a company car. Everything so far is great except.... The sound from the stereo is terrible, & further investigation seems to show no sound from the rear? Have speaker grills but no sound so possibly no actual speakers. Is this a known issue with an import, & if so is it an easy enough job to retrofit some? Or will it be a nightmare! I assume if there are no actual speakers then there will be no wiring in place. Going into the menu only gives L/R balance option, no fade so I assume the worst. Great car apart from this, but this is really letting it down unfortunately. Any advice or plan of action would be gratefully received! Many thanks in advance.
Woppum
Massivke unlikly. I had an import R32 and had speakers. My guess is they are not connected.
Tarmac_Terrorist
There should be a fader but I can't remember how to do it. As far as I know, there hasn't been any issues with imports not having speakers. My guess is that either they've not been connected or the fader needs adjusting. The stereo is v poor quality even with all 4 speakers working. A big welcome to TSN also
fresco1
Word of warning from my days with BMW, don't automatically assume the speakers are in there! You can have a look with a torch, should be able to see the centre part of the cone reflecting, might have to shine the torch from an angle and look directly into the speaker at the same time etc etc. Cars do arrive without bits! If its an RCD300 or 500, fading to the back L and back R would give a clue - worth a try?
djjuk
Cheers for the quick replies chaps. Had read that the sound was meant to be poor & assumed it was just that. But had another play tonight & there is defo no sound coming from the back. [ QUOTE ] If its an RCD300 or 500, fading to the back L and back R would give a clue - worth a try? [/ QUOTE ] It is the standard RCD300, & there is no fade option at all in the menu that I can see? just L/R balance which works in the front but no change in the back. Unfortunately it has also arrived with no manual which apparently it seems is common with imports. But can't see anywhere else it would be within the menu system. It's a pain

TwoSheds
I'm sure I read recently, can't remember where at the moment, there are some markets where there are no rear speakers. Which country was it supplied from & is it a 3 or 5 door ?

If this is the case does anyone know how big a job it would be to add some rear speakers?
djjuk
After a bit more searching & via the option codes in my service book it appears my car was specced with 4 passive speakers. 8RE = four loudspeakers (passive) http://igorweb.org/equidec/Default.aspx Bugga. Any idea if this can be dealer updated to add the rears at my cost? Or am I looking at a car audio specialist as the best route? Cheers.
JonnyGTi
My import came from Denmark but has rear speakers. I've not heard of anyone not getting rear speakers with their GTI (edit) just checked mine and it says 8RM = eight loudspeakers (passive) so maybe you've got a weird spec afterall
djjuk
My mistake there, it has come from Holland. No rear speakers as confirmed via option codes on the sticker in the service plan book. Seems strange but there we go.
TwoSheds
Dutch GTI do, as you've found, have only four speakers as standard. Worth getting a quote from both a dealer & a car audio outfit to upgrade. The wiring at least may still be there as you can specify 8 speakers as a build upgrade on a Dutch model. Be interesting to hear what price they quote.
mikemod
[ QUOTE ] http://igorweb.org/equidec/Default.aspx [/ QUOTE ] Excellent link, I was wondering what all those letters meant in the service book
Snoopy
I have been told in the past from someone with a lower spec golf that if you plug in the rear speakers the fader option then appears on the RCD300+ headunit. My advice would be get a good car audio specialist to do it for you they will have a clue what there doing unlike most dealers on this sort of matter. Also afterarket speakers will be FAR cheaper and FAR better quality then the ones from VW. looks to me like you got a front speaker only car. nhs
Yup, agree, go for aftermarket speakers, not the rather dreadful ones that come with the RCD300 in all its 8 speaker glory
CrowdedHouse
[ QUOTE ] (edit) just checked mine and it says 8RM = eight loudspeakers (passive) so maybe you've got a weird spec afterall [/ QUOTE ] This could be passive in the sense that there's no extra amplification(an active speaker has an amp built in) Mine(Ireland)has the same code and has rear speakers. Actually I was under the impression initially that mine was supposed to have 10,the grilles over the door handles are empty though.
mikemod
My code is 8RW = 10 loudspeakers - MY05
djjuk
Well spoke to a dealer & got the usual "Well it will be costly, not easily done blah blah" So have spoken to a local car audio specialist who reckons it is a relatively easy procedure & should not break the bank to get a decent sound. Will go & see them on Saturday to see what they suggest. May end up upgrading the RCD300 as well as it is really not the best, & doing 30k a year I need a reasonable sound from the stereo! Thanks for all the advice so far..GREAT car apart from this

Shadowman
Yes, standard spec was reduced 10 to 8. The Soundpack adds 2 speakers to make 10 total.
