Auto Express cab long term review

Oct 2003 (on the web at the moment) has a long term review of the Cab, including some alpine long distance driving. The AE website doesn't let you do a direct link to the article... it's at www.autoexpress.co.uk though

Their car happens to be a TDI heart.gif but after my own diesel-fuelled canterings round the Lakes (pretty effortless torque at steep gradients) I was surprised to read of the throttle struggling to get round mountain roads blush.gif - the Alps are a bit higher altitude than I was, admittedly - however, they do pin this on the CVT rather than the "punchy" engine. Mine's a manual, which seems by far the best combo.

Of more interest to you Petrol Penguins pengy.gif , longterm comments on the car in general include a late-developing squeak from the roof, and a peeling of the number plate lamination. They're not keen on the handling, which is probably no real surprise - mind you, as mentioned before I'm much happier with mine now, on new Michelin Pilot tyres kept at 38 psi (front)/35 (rear). I wonder what their setup was - the handling does seem very sensitive to these things, maybe 'cos of the weight of the vehicle.

Their other niggle was the difficulty of cleaning the 18 inch cross-spoke alloys, which I must say look a fiddly nightmare even on the photo - they also look a bit "South London BMW" to me, so I wouldn't want them anyway...

They liked the overall wind insulation, wind deflector, and sports seats, and end up saying the car's "very popular" with the team, as a magazine longtermer.
