bodger00
My recent experience in phoning my insurance company (they quoted me an extra £20 just for adding a K&N Panel filter) has caused me to think if I venture down the REVO route is it going to cost me a fortune I am hardly a young driver anymore and have all the ticks in the right boxes as far as insurance is concerned i.e married, living in a good area, full no claims, no accidents and no convictions. I am curious to find out if adding performance mods has increased your premium substantially? In particular has remapping your GTI added ££££ to your premium? mikemod
I'm insured with Greenlight Insurance and there was no extra charge for my Bluefin remap. They were also the cheapest quote I got without modification
DHA
Yep greenlight for me too. Great rates and mod friendly
TheReflex
Been tempted to go with Greenlight myself but their website is shocking and on line quoting system doesn't seem very very accurate when asking for details about you? Has anyone actually made a claim through them?
AdyGTI
I've just added anti-roll bars to my insurance with a £19 hike in premium. I don't have any no-claims discount but no accidents/convictions either as I leased a car before. Thought it wouldn't be that much but it equates to 2-3% of the premium so is not alot really, Admiral insurance btw.
RedRobin
Some mods result in an insurance hike and others don't and there is also a big factor about your history and age etc. I usually ask my insurer (DirectLine) what any increases would be before I actually do them. What amuses me is that my list of mods with them is so long that they have run out of space on the policy document!!
cah
they really should make it so that more power is ok as long as it doesn't go too high - so have an accelerating scale. Boost car power by 20% and it is a small increase. Boost power by 50% then charge a lot more. shows a much higher chance of something going wrong in terms of accident or mechanical. They should really lower premiums for people who modify to add safety features. Anti roll bars, improved suspension, better brakes, higher quality engine parts should lower insurance if they make the car safer..........then again, perhaps only a nutter likely to crash is interested in those things All I know is I'm 21 I drive a crappy A160 which has 102bhp and still costs 1200GBP a year to insure. Can you imagine how much it would cost me just to get a stock ED30? then chip it to 300bhp? 5000GBP a year? lol. I don't think its the modifications that cause hikes - it is simply how their opinion changes of you as a result.
stooH
Most insurancve companies do have a sliding scale for power, for instance if I were to chip mine and the increase was less than 20% it's less than £20 a year increase, if I go above 20% it starts getting a lot more expensive... bodger00
RED - I too am with Direct Line. Did you classify your revo remap as a 20% increase?
Chungster
I had Greenlight quote me on my "plans" last week and I couldn't believe it came out CHEAPER than what I'm currently paying for a standard car! And the "plans" were rather serious too!
bodger00
I have got to say im always really careful with insurance and I would prefer to go with a more established company. Greenlight may be cheaper but I rest assured that im with a reliable larger company. Its when things go wrong i.e a crash, you find out what they are really like
mikemod
I know a few guys on another VW forum that have needed to use Greenlight when the unthinkable happens and they have had no problems. The advantage of Greenlight is that they specialise in modified cars and hot hatches whereas some of the larger companies don't want to know. Chungster
Couldn't have put it better myself mike. Unlike other places like Adrian Flux...avoid like the plague!
