alcatraz
Right then, not sure how to describe this one, I get in my car, turn the key to the helf way point so the lights go out, on doing this I hear noise eminating from the area of the fuel tank or drivers side rear wheel, sounds a bit like a hissing noise, or someone going 'pssst', it only lasts for around 2 seconds. Turn the key back and try it again and the noise is there, but this time, only lasts for a split second, third time trying, no noise at all, which makes me think something is readying it self for movement or warming up. Turn the engine over and then off again and we go through this all again...very odd. Was going to take it to garage, but thought tyresmoke would be a good place to start! activa
I got a feeling this is the fuel pump priming itself. Don't think it's anything to worry about,my Golf has done it since the day I got it and never caused a problem.
alcatraz
Yes, it does sound like it could be that, I just have not noticed it before. Cheers.

speaky
I concur with SootChucker. Most likely the fuel pump priming itself prior to ignition. Guess that's why the advice re miss-fueling is to NOT turn the ignition key at all, cos (admittedly a small amount of) the wrong fuel will be sucked into the pump and therefore get to the engine etc
alcatraz
Yep, the noise stops when tank is filled, and then come again again when about 3/4 empty.
