a3malawimatt
Hi All, My Sportback is now 8 months old and is currently on about 6k millege. My average MPG is only 28-29mpg which is useless for a diesel, especially a 2.0. I am only getting max 350 miles to a tank. Also i am getting tractor sounds. I have got in Audi (Norwich) today for investigation as i think it is very poor. Especially when they sell it on economy. If they don't come up with anything i shall be taking my case to Audi UK to complain and seek compensation or something as i bought the car purely for its economy. I sold my petrol A3 for this reason. I know others have had problems with this from previous posts, will update when i hear more. Matt
Nelson_R32
You've pretty much answered your own question on the MPG front. If you're only doing the equivilant of 8000 miles a year I wouldn't expect PD170 MPG to be much (if at all) higher than that.
a3malawimatt
right, i might be being thick here, but how does the milege i do a year make a difference? bearing in mind that i do take it on longer jouneys etc so is mixed driving. Alastair_A3
I guess Nelson assumed you only did short journies to have low mileage Start stop short journies have a big impact on the car's MPG. My wife gets 35-40 mpg in her 2.0 TDI A3 (140bhp)
a3malawimatt
well i used my old 2.0 FSI on exactly the same journeys etc in same job and lifestyle and got same mpg. Seems something is up....... i hope so anyway...... Matt
a3malawimatt
just had audi on the phone, cannot find anything wrong with it . They have sent a technical report to audi uk and i will follow it up with a phonecall to them tomorrow as i could understand maybe getting 35mpg but 28 is ridiculous. jwo
lots of short journeys - less thank say 10miles, and town driving will equal poor mpg in a diesel. also manufacturers claims for diesel mpg are vastly different from real life mpgs, where as manufacturers claims for petrol mpg are quite easily achievable! diesel really only make economic sense if you are doing over 18k per year too! fingermouse
i know itsa not the same car but my wife gets 500 miles to a tank out of a gt tdi mk5 golf. minimum journey is usually 8 miles

hoofboy
Something is not right IMO, my 3.2 does 7K per year and average is 26-38. Follow it through!!! good luck
Fazzzman
Worried now. My 170PD comes in 2 weeks. I was getting 32-33 on my 110 mile daily round trip in my 2.0TFSi Sportback, but I've got a 2.2 diesel Civic temporarily, which is achieving low 50s on the same run. Is anyone else with a 170 TDi A3/SB getting poor mpg?
h5djr
When I was talking to my dealer the other day, out of idle curiosity I asked him what the trade-in value of my 170 Sportback would be and he quoted around £18,000.
a3malawimatt
i think private with all the options and it being s line etc i might be lucky and get 21 - 22k. Maybe i am dreaming but it retails at £28k. Matt
edo
Done 8000 miles in my TDi 170 (BHP!). Averaging 44pmg since I got it. Can get just over 60 on a 50 mile run if I try. Even if I drive it very hard for most of a journey I see over 30mpg.
SJC1975
Max part exhange would be £18K but expect around £16-£17k. Car supermarkets would offer £14-£16k depending on condition. If you want good fuel economy stick to the 1.9tdi or get a BMW! The Audi 2.0TDI is a poor engine in both performance and fuel economy!
SJC1975
You may wish to turn your a/c off too to increase mpg
Vic
[ QUOTE ] The Audi 2.0TDI is a poor engine in both performance and fuel economy! [/ QUOTE ] Justify that statement!! This after a 37mile drive to work, does it regularly. The performance is superb too if you need it, to use that you need more fuel, there is a lever in the footwell on the drivers side that adjusts this. The choice is yours! Beat that Prius owners! wallboy
I am averaging 45 mpg in my 170. ave just clocked up 10k miles. I live in central London so all journeys start with a 30 minute "traffic heavy" portion. Really loosened up after about 6-7k miles. Just done Chippenham and back c. 200 miles and saw 49.1 overall. Granted 170 miles of that is m-way and I drive at about 75 mph. Still, I don't think that is too bad. Coming out of a 140 bhp A3 I was initially shocked at the bad economy, but now it ain't too far away. And, the extra performance more than makes up for it. century_one
My 3 Door 2.0TDI 140bhp did 49mpg. My current Sportback with same engine does 43mpg. Exactly the same journey every day but with a lot more options than the 3 Door. I'm guessing the difference is due to the weight of the car? A4 2.0TDI 170bhp is on order and now I'm anxious!!!
