My Grand Tour

8 posts in this topic

In July, I am planning on a 'Grand Tour' of Europe.  (of the brothels and whore houses of Europe.....  maybe Mr Bangle can advise? - joke!!!!)

I have am doing in a Portillo stylie, so doing it by train but without the natty trousers, jackets and no Bradshaws guide.

I am Eurostaring to Nancy for a few days.  Then onto Innsbruck for 3 nights with some Alp walking.  Next is Vienna and finally onto Prague.  In Prague, I need to book in some shooting practice as they have many a gun range there.  Get my grubby mitts on an Uzi or Glock or Scorpion and a few others. .  Just hope they don't swab me for GSR on the way back.

Have booked a flight back from Prague on Whizair.  I have a friend coming out to meet me in Prague as she wants to see the place too.  Other than that, it will just be me.

I might book a trip on the Danube from Vienna to Bratislava as a day boat trip.

Does anyone have experience of any of these places?

Am definitely looking forward to this!!!

If you're in Prague on a weekend the avoid Wenceslas Square after early evening as it's full of pissed brits on stag dos.  It's awful.

Prague is a great city, I've been there numerous times.  If you're planning to visit the castle then take the tram up the hill, it looks a long way up but I found out the hard way that it's even longer than it looks.

Don't bother eating at the Old Town Square (where the astronomical clock is) as the food isn't great and the prices are jacked up because of the location.  One of my favourite places to eat is Pivovarsky Dum where the service isn't great but the food and beer are excellent.

There's loads of choice of hotels, we've stayed in Hotel Noir a few times and would happily go back.

We tend not to bother using the Prague metro too much, the city isn't all that big and it's a nice place to walk about.

The good thing about Prague is that it's big enough that you can avoid the pissed up British stag dos. Explore the little cobbled streets around the old town for great cafes and music bars. +++

The long esplanade in Prague up to the natural history museum has an Argentinian steak restaurant down an escalator under a shopping centre on the left hand side.

It's doesn't matter what you order as the waiter will bring you a fillet steak and forget all English if you query it or the bill. One of the top 3 steaks I've ever had!

I love Prague! Been a few times. Don't be put off by the stag-do comments - it's no different to most major towns on that front in my experience. Same with the lol-OMG you'll get pick-pocketed etc. Just be sensible and you'll be fine.

You know what I wouldn't do? Use a local taxi firm. They're a bunch of crooks. Use Uber!

As a single bloke walking around Nancy, Innsbruck, Vienna and Prague at night - absolutely no issues.

No hints of pick pocketing, restaurants were happy to serve and in no rush to move me on.

Luckily, I was in Prague during mid-week, so was not too roudy.  I left on the Friday eve, and the Thursday eve was starting to pick up with groups of lads and lasses wondering around, so imagine that the Friday and Saturday eve would be terrible!

Taxi wise, I didn't use many, as most of my hotels were in walking distance of the train station.  The rest of the time, I walked everywhere.

Did the obligatory shooting trip in Prague.  Shot the 44 Magnum, the Glock, the AK-47, the Uzi 9mm (in Arnie accent obviously) and the Remington pump action Police shotgun.  The guns were in single shot mode as otherwise the inexperienced would have been all over the place.  The AK is a beast.  We had to lie down with it.  The Uzi is surprisingly heavy - designed before composites arrived?  The 44 Mag is just awesome and the Glock - need to be careful with that recoil.

Would, loved to have tried one of them in semi auto mode or even full auto.

My favourite?  The 44 Mag I think, but I did like the feel of the Uzi and the AK.

I could feel my muscles tiring as the session progressed, holding the Uzi and the Magnum was quite an effort.

Safety wise, got the basics and away we went, big indoor range, ear defenders in as those bastards are loud!!!  No photos during the shooting, but plenty after.

Feeling the recoil, hearing the noise and seeing both the target and ricochet make you think how deadly these things can be in the wrong hands.

Yes, damn grippy soles on these Nikes!

Something very manly about letting a few rounds go.
