I had insurance with Egg, after a nast experience with Norwich Union, but have just reduced my premium by £150, down to £350 with Egg, and on top of that get 0% interest
Happy Christmas to me ....
Don't know how to check the alarm completely, but how about disabling it ("blip" key fob twice I think?) and then seeing if it's ok after a couple of days?
To check if it is your drive shafts, you can use a trick I used when I had a Landrover .......
Put two jubiliee clips on each driveshaft, with the "weights" opposing each other about 1/3 of the way along the driveshaft each.
Do this on both driveshafts. If your vibration disappears, you know what the problem is. You can then remove clips from each driveshaft in turn to isolate the one that is unbalanced.

With a rabbit hutch on the roof, on the way back I managed to get about 35mpg. Without, I expect it would have been around 37-39 at a constant 80-85mph.
Was up in Rothbury, where the in laws lived until this week!
Why not a golf then?
The A4 1.6 that I had as a company car (before they upgraded to an oilburner 130bhp) was so slow I thought I was going backwards!
Will your insurance not stretch to a Passat 1.8 (not the 1.8T)?
